Tuesdays in the r-vn 7 ( o f o By Patti Gallagher UNL Students for Life, still awaiting official recognition as a university organization, made plans to "get on campus and educate people at a Tuesday meet ing in the Nebraska Union. , Students for Life, a nearly 90-member organization, is dedicated to protecting the right to life for each person, focusing primarily on the rights of the unborn, according to President Judy Tiehen. The group submitted a constitution Friday to Campus Activities and Programs, Tiehen said, and should be recognized within the month. The submission of a constitution is the final step to receive official recognition and, according to ASUN President Bud Cuca, a pro-life group has turned in a constitution, but further action has not been taken on it. Cuca said he is uncertain if the constitution was that of Students for Life or another campus pro-life group. The 25 members discussed plans and recent events, with concentration on strategies for educating the UNL (l(2 GTSkKjSClc:! Editor in chief: Rocky H.A. Strunk. ST TLES tCCE c a n d TTo moi TTXj community about their pro-life stand.. Slides bought The group decided to purchase a set of slides compiled by a Cincinnati doctor. The slides will be previewed by the group to provide them with ammunition for instruct, ing the campus. The slides may then be open for public viewing. .... The slides support the pro-life stand, with slides of fetuses accompanied with anti-abortion narration. Students for Life plan to schedule speaking engage ments throughout the campus, Tiehen said. Pro-life presentations are tentatively planned for university clubs, sororities, fraternities, classes dealing with abortion issues, and possibly secondary and elementary schools. Other plans for Students for Life include support of a legislative bill, introduced by Columbus Sen. Don Dworak, the Bouman amendment and the publishing of a weekly newsletter. LB891 would prohibit state-paid group insurance from covering abortion costs for state employees. Public hear ings on the bUt are scheduled soon. Tiehen encouraged Students for Life to attend and voice their support. Tiehen also encouraged support of a national amend ment, now before the U.S. Senate. The Bouman amend ment would allow each state to decide if Medicare funds could be used for abortions, removing this decision from federal legislation. Newsletter planned The Daily Nebraskan incorrectly reported that . Students for Life opposed the Bouman amendment Feb.l. . ' Students for Life planned their first newsletter for printing on Feb. 12. Tiehen said the letter, a summary of group events, would .be distributed to group members and possibly to other right-to-life groups and state senators. The group also discussed their position on contra ceptives, adopting a neutral stand. "Contraception in itself is not a pro-life issue," Tiehen said, and therefore Students for Life will remain neutral on all methods of birth control, except those that lead directly to abortions. Opposing non-abortive contraception gets into the scope of religion, which Tiehen says is something the group must steer clear of. Religious anti-abortion arguments generally are in effective. Tiehen said, and bring cries of "religious fanatics" from their opposition. Students for Life will begin a membership drive in mid March, to increase membership and gain a strong foothold for next year's group, Tiehen said. Correction The Daily Nebraskan incorrectly reported Wednesday that Rumaldo Lovato, a graduate sociology student, contends in his research that assimilation is a process of rejection for minorities and immigrants. Instead, Lovato said assimilation can serve as a process of self-hatred or re jection. The quote that followed should have read, "It causes self-hatred and rejection, the feeling of being inferior when in fact cultures are not inferior. Lovato is working on a new organization, United Chicanos and Chicanas of Aztlan, whose purpose is more political than social, he said.
