LANCASTER COUNTY CMEROENCV SERVICE UNL student's death A UNL student who died last weekend at his parents' home in Omaha, apparently died of an overdose of a lithium carbonate, or another drug, prescribed by the Uni versity Health Center. Mark R. Woodworth, a Teachers College senior and a rank leader in the Cornhusker Marching Band, was pre scribed lithium in November to combat a blood imbalance that caused periodic severe depression, said his father, Lloyd Woodworth. His father also said another drug was prescribed but could not name the drug. "The last month had been wonderful. Mark had made unbelievable progress," he said. However, Mark became very depressed on Friday, went to Omaha for the weekend and secluded himself in his bedroom Sunday evening, where he was found "dead. Douglas County coroner George Kennan ruled the death an accidental overdose, Omaha police said. Dr. Robert Heins, director of the Health Center's mental health unit, refused to comment on the case, citing confidentiality between doctors and their patients. Lloyd Woodworth said Heins and other doctors at the center had been very helpful to Mark. Students receiving National Direct Stu dent Loan checks for second semester can pick them up in the Nebraska Union Ball room Feb. 11-13, while those applying for Guaranteed Student Loans have until March IS to apply. NDSL checks will be issued from 9:30- 11:30 ajn. and from 1-4:00 pjn said Nancy Wiederspan, assistant director of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aids. About 2,000 students will receive checks for second semester, she said. The loans range from $200 to $2,500. The NDSL is based on financial need, Wiederspan said. To apply, students must fill out a financial aid form (FAF), avail able in the financial aids office. Although it is too late to apply for this semester, the deadline to apply for next year is March 1. By sending in the FAF, students also will be considered for a grant and work-study job. It is determined by the cost of education minus any financial aid the student receives. Students wishing to apply must do so through a lending institution, she said. The financial aids office then recommends to the lender an amount based on the stu. dent's educational costs. The maximum loan amount is $2,500 per academic year for undergraduates, and $5,000 for graduates. . "That isn't automatic," Wiederspan said. "It depends on the cost of educa tion." . Both loans are interest-free while the student is still in school, she said. An inter est of three percent for the NDSL and seven percent for the GSL begins nine months after leaving school.
