The Huskers lost to Kansas and Missouri last weekend, but qualified three divers for the NCAA Championship meet. 3 UNL divers make national times The UNL men's swimming and diving team qualified three divers for the National Collegiate Athletic Association championships in a dual with Missouri Satur day. : Although Nebraska lost the meet 80-33, the divers proved that Diving , Coach Jeff Huber made a good decision in letting diver Steve Elliott miss the meet to compete with the gymnastics team in Lincoln . "Letting Elliott ro home proved to be a good decision by Coach Huber," Mead Swimming Coach Cal Bentz said. "Those divers got to qualify and received some recogni tion "he said. Elliott is the Huskers' leading diver, as well as the gymnastics team's, top vaulter and floor exercise competitor. Scott Hinrichs won the one-meter diving competition with 522.75 points, qualifying for the NCAA champion ships and setting a new pool record at Missouri. He also won the three-meter diving event with 505.70 points which also qualified him nationally in that event. Todd Bendkowski placed third on the one-meter board with 495.20 points and second on the three-meter board with 504 .65 -both NCAA qualifying scores. Lance Green placed second on the one-meter board with 498 JO points and also qualified for nationals. Husker Anders Rutqvist was the only winner for the swimming team. He placed first in the 1 ,000 meter free style and set a new school record with a time of 9:4734. The Huskers' next home meets will be Friday night against Northern Illinois and Saturday against Iowa State at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Dining room expanding capacity By Lori McGinnis The Colonial Dining Room in the Nebraska Union has expanded its seating by 50 since the neighboring Pewter Room was opened to accommodate extra customers, according to Daryl Swanson, director of the Nebraska Unions. The daily customer count in the Colonial Room has increased from 70 to 90 since the closing of the UNL Faculty Club cafeteria in the Alumni House Dec. 14, he said. , Because of the closing, some faculty club members needed a place to meet for Junch. Swanson agreed to open the Pewter Room Jan. 14 to accommodate their needs. But, he said the Pewter Room will not be a private faculty club room. The room was opened "in order to accommodate the expected influx of people. But it's not a private dining room solely for the use of the faculty club," Swanson said. Swanson said the restaurant's customers are mostly UNL faculty and administrative staff. Private luncheons Before the Pewter Room was opened for customer service, it was used one to two hours a day for private luncheons and meetings, Swanson said. The only additional expense in using the room for restaurant service will be from hiring two more waitresses, Swanson said. Customers can choose to sit in either the Colonial Room or the Pewter Room. The kitchen is between with a separate doorway into each room. The customers can't go-from one room to the other without walking into the" hallway, Swanson said. Converting the two rooms into one is a possibility, he said, at a cost of $50,000. However, it would destroy the decor of the Pewter Room, which Swanson said he is reluctant to do. The Pewter Room, built in 1938, is the only original room left in the union..- Financial loss The Colonial Dining Room has been operating at a financial loss for the past 10 years, Swanson said, with annual losses ranging from 55,000 to breaking even. Swanson said it remains to be seen whether the additional customers will boost the restaurant's income. "We're optimistic," he said, "but it's too early to de termine if it's going to help us financially,'' he said. Losses from the Colonial Room and other union rest aurants are subsidized by student fees, Swanson said. "Food service operations in both unions, a $1.2 million operation, lost $50,000 during the last fiscal year. Swanson said he hopes all operations will break even by June 30, 1981; The Colonial Room represents 3 per cent of the union food services income. If it continues to , operate at a loss, the Colonial Room may close. , Swanson said the idea of closing the Colonial Room has been discussed, but no plans have been made. "Its future is not ensured," he said. psgrll Nominations are open Nominations are being accepted for the 1980 Awards for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity. The awards are in recognition of research or activities of national significance conducted by UNL faculty members. To be eligible for the award, each nominee must have done a major part of the work on which the nomination is based at UNL, and must still be engaged in research or other creative work at UNL. Nominations may be submitted and seconded by any full-time UNL faculty members. For purposes of the award, the faculty will be divided into two groups, each group composed of three of the six academic areas repre sented on the Executive Graduate Council. The academic areas in each group will be considered for nomination, but an award need not be made to either group, and no more than three awards may be made to any one group in any one year. Award recipients are selected by a six-member commit tee composed of one representative from each academic area. The dean of the Graduate College selects the com mittee members from among the members of the graduate faculty to serve a two-year term. The committee decides on the criteria for the awards, and will publish them on the nomination forms. Only one award may be given for a particular piece of research or creative activity. Six complete copies of each nomination should be submitted before Feb. 25 to the chairman of the commit' tee and sent to 226 Regents Hall, 3835 Holdrege, Lincoln, Nebraska 68583.
