A new university logo, a newly-elected chairman and
university financial matters were discussed Saturday by
the NU Board of Regents.
Regent Kermit Hansen of Omaha, who proposed a con
test to develop a new NU logo at the December board
meeting, reintroduced the idea and won the approval of
the board.
Hansen's plan includes changing university letterheads,
stationery and signs. According to Hansen, the cost of
switching to a new logo is minimal. Because the same
stationery would be used, dye and a design element would
be the only expenses, he said. . .
University signs are changed every four years so chang
ing the design would be made in phases with no cost, he
added.
Disparity exists in publications of the separate campus
es and university services, Hansen said, and a new logo
would provide a symbol that the public could easily re
cognize. Cuca supports logo
Student Regent Bud Cuca said he supports the new
logo because the people of the state may incorrectly per
ceive separate units of the university. He said that the uni
versity system should be emphasized.
The only dissenting opinion came , from Regent Ed
Schwartzkopf of Lincoln, who said that each campus is
unique and that a logo would put all the campuses "in a
neat little package."
Jim Raglin, NU director, of public affairs, told the
regents that several universities similar to the NU system .
have a university-wide logo. Hansen said that several
schools have expressed an interest in receiving informa
tion, should NU adopt a new logo.
Hansen suggested that prize money from non-tax
sources be awarded to the top three entrants in the logo
contest. The regents directed the administration to set up
the contest.
Chairman elected
The regents also elected Regent Robert Raun of
Minden as chairman. Raun, 51, held the position twice,
once in 1970 and again in 1971. Raun has been on the
board since 1966.
The nominations for chairman were closed after Raun's
nomination and he was unanimously elected. Regent
Robert Prokop of Wilbur was again elected vice chairman,
also unanimously. Prokop is the only present regent who
hasn't been elected chairman. He has served on the board
since 1970.
The regents were told "of a possible deferment of the
proposed Student Information Office because of difficul
ties with the university computer network budget. Chan
cellor Roy Young told the regents that the computer net
work budget has not kept up with increase in computer
use.
The regents also directed NU officials to ask the Legi
slature for at least $450,000 to replace revenue lost
through sales tax paid on construction projects.
Salaries increase
-. The regents approved salary increases for the NU foot
ball coaching staff. Head Coach Tom Osborne's salary was
increased from $44,000 to $48,000.
A proposal made by Cuca to rotate the site of regent
meetings among the three campuses received disapproval
from the regents. Cuca said such an arrangement would
benefit the regents by putting them closer to their consti
tuents while providing students with an educational
opportunity to watch a governing body work.
Regent James Moylanof Omaha disagreed with the
proposal because vital records are kept in Regents' Hall
and are essential to the meetings.
Cuca then suggested that the meetings be held in the
evenings to allow more persons to attend, but this pro
posal was voted down. .
