Five art posters gone from union lounge
Five of 50 art posteri of rnrir or,;
.. ... i .. . . uaia were sioien
irom the Nebraska Union's main lounge during the week
end. The posters were put out by a promotional group
from Serigraphics ot Indianapolis and were being display:
ed as an art form, according to the chairwoman of
University Program Council's Visual Arts Committee
Bonnie Lutz said the posters were exhibited first last
week, but Saturday morning and Sunday night, several
were gone. The rest of the posters have been taken down
The thefts may hurt the committee, not only be
requiring its insurance company to pay for the Joss, But
also by dampening its reputation nationally amona artists
whose work it might want to display, Lutz said.
Because the thefts were in public, Lutz wasconcerned
about the security of future exhibits.
One of the alternatives the committee may be forced
to accept is to stop displaying art. The only security now
are night managers and reliance on the large number of
people in the lounge during the days to discourage theft.
Another alternative is to build up security 24 hours a
day, as other universities have done. But Lutz questioned
the feasibility of spending student fees for security.
Another alternative would be to continue as in the
past, and hope the awareness of the thefts would keep
people on the lookout, she said.
Any information in regard to the thefts would be
accepted, with no questions asked, at the CAP office,
Nebraska Union 200, she said.
24-hour parking protested by Lincolnite
A citizen from the Near South neighborhood in Lin
coin came before the Lincoln City Council Monday com
plaining about parking.
Sim Gurewitz, 1443V1 D St., ,aid, "I work downtown.
So, I walk to conserve energy and I'm being penalized for
it." ' .
Gurewitz said he has received two tickets for parking
longer than 24 hours in one place.
"I figured they should know," Gurewitz said.
Council Member Mike Steinman said Mayor Helen
Boosalis was going to look into the parking problem with
the Near South Neighborhood Association.
"There are conflicts," Boosalis said. "There are those
who have no other place to park."
Ken Miller, chairman of the Near South Neighborhood
Association said the parking issue has two sides, as far as
the association is concerned.
Some residents live close to where they work and thus
do not move their cars every 24 hours, he said.
On the other side of the coin, Miller said, "People may
have an old car and when cold weather comes, they leave
it there."
