Swim season opens;
some remain home
Nebraska swimming coach Cal Bentz has a problem
many coaches wouldn't mind having.
With an NCAA limit of 18 swimmers participating irfa
meet, Bentz said the Huskers have so much depth this sea
son that he will have to leave swimmers home that could
score in the Big Eight meet.
You'd like a chance to swim everyone in competi
tion," Bentz said. 4That way you can make a better
assessment of the swimmers."
The swim team will open their season at the Cyclone
Invitational Friday and Saturday. Besides the Huskers and
host school Iowa State, Wisconsin, Southern Illinois and
Minnesota also will compete.
Bentz said the competition will be tough. While Iowa
State finished second in the Big Eight a year ago, Wiscon
sin, Southern Illinois and Minnesota all finished in the top
20 last year in the NCAA meet. However, no team scores
will be kept at the invitational.
"It's going to be a good meet to get our guys started
into the season," Bentz said.
Bentz said he isn't sure yet who will swim in the meet.
"Right now, we have some soreness and stiffness, but
nothing real serious," Bentz said. "It's something common
we'll have all season. We'll just have to wait and see who
will be able to go and who won't."
Bentz said there is no way to know how the Huskers
would finish in the meet if team scores were kept.
"I would imagine all the teams are better than they
were last year," Bentz said. "You've got to figure their re
cruiting was better this year than it has been in the past."
The Huskers had their intra-squad meet Nov. 3, and
Bentz said he was pleased with the swimmers' times. He
said this year's times were faster than they were in last
year's intra-squad meet, which was three weeks later than
this year's. -
"I expect to see some' improvement injthe times this
weekend," Bentz said. "There is more motivation swim
ming against other schools."
