Love Hall expects
Female agriculture or home economics majors who
would like to save about half the cost of dormitory living
may want to consider living at Love Memorial Hall on
East Campus.
The hall is in an unusual .situation and has several open
ings this year. There is room for 49 women, with 46 spots
filled, according to Nancy Burkhart, vice president in
charge of duties for the hall. More spaces will become
available during the spring semester when several residents
will move out, she said.
'There are some residents that are teaching assistants
that won't be coming back and several women will be
getting married," Burkhart said. The hall expects to have
about 10 openings for the spring semester she added.
In the past, there has been a waiting list of women
wishing to live in the hall. Wendy Buettow, resident
adviser for the hall, said she thinks the problem is that
people don't know the hall is available.
The hall was built in 1941 with a donation from Don
Love. Love wanted students to earn part of their college
experience by working for it.
That philosophy allows the women to realize a sub
stantial savings compared to other common living arrange
ments. The residents do all of their own housework and.
cooking. .
The residents are divided into groups of six or seven
women and they divide the duties among themselves every
two weeks, Burkhart said.

There is quite a bit of responsibility involved,
especially with cooking," Burkhart said. "Every two
weeks the women in different groups change duties. One
person will cook, another will clean and some will be
given free time," Burkhart said.
Hall residents are working on getting boarders for next
fall. "It may be kind of late for the spring semester, so ou;
big push will be for next fall, Buettow said. The residents
will try to make high scluol students aware of the hall,
she said. t
The openings in the spring will cause problems, Burk
hart said. There will be problems getting duties done with
out having anyone double up, since the system is designed
for 49 women. "We're just going to have to have the
people here tell others that the opportunity to live here
exists," she said. .
Love Memorial Hall is different from other coop living
arrangements in that all residents are either agriculture or
home economics majors. That helps incoming freshmen to
adjust to college life and it creates a bond between the
residents, Burkhart said.
