UNL lias
By Ron Powell
For the first time since the 1975-1976 season, UNL
will have a junior varsity basketball team.
The team will consist of a few varsity players and 12
walk-on players, according to junior varsity coach John
ILmmond.
"The team was basically set up for the varsity players
who are not seeing playing time with the varsity, and need
experience,' Hammond said.
Hammond said the team will usually carry 15 players,
but that the number of varsity players will determine how
many walk-ons will suit up for a game.
"Some games there could be more than three players
come down from the varsity," Hammond said. "I have no
say on who comes down to play for us. It's all determined
by the varsity ."
Most of the walk-ons, Hammond said, have had pre
vious basketball experience from high school, but most of
them had not planned to play college basketball.
"I am really happy to see these kids have an opportun
ity to play some more organized basketball after high
school," Hammond said. 'It gives them a chance to get
some exercise and break away from school for a while. We
stress to our players, though, that school comes before
basketball." -
THE TEAM has been practicing for more than two
weeks in preparation for their first game against the Salem
Oilers, a Lincoln AAU team. The game will be the pre
liminary contest to the varsity's exhibition contest against
Windsor, Ont. "

basketball team
The first game should be an interesting one," Ham
mond said. "It scares me to play an AAU team because
you're playing against 24 or 25-year-old men who probab
ly already have college experience. But we might be more
organized than they are and in better condition."
He said the team has a 13-game schedule, and that he
was working on extending it to a 15-game schedule. He
added, however, that some schools could cancel.
"WE HAD A home-and-home series scheduled with
Kansas State, but they canceled for unknown reasons,"
Hammond said. Kansas State is the only other Big Eight
school with a jay vee program .
Hammond said the jayvees will run the same type of
offense and defense as the varsity, but on a simpler scale.
"We run the same type of things because when the
scholarship players come down, they will be able to fit
right in," Hammond said. The varsity players who will
play on the jayvee team practice with the varsity, Ham
mond added.
Hammond says he has been pleased with the team's
progress this season.
"Even though they are walk-ons, they all have basket
ball experience and that helps," Hammond said. "What'
makes it tough is when the scholarship players come
down, some of those walk-ons that have worked hard in
practice might have to sit out in the games."
Hammond said that if the jayvee program is successful,
there could be walk-on recruiting for .the jayvee team
much like the football team's. He added, however, that
with the 15 scholarship limit and the freshman eligibility
rule, it is hard to establish a successful jayvee team.
