Boosalis joins
smokeout effort
By Kathy Stokcbrand
Mayor Helen Boosalis signed a proclamation
Wednesday afternoon supporting 'The Great American
Smokeout" on Nov. 15.
The proclamation is part of a nationwide campaign
urging smokers to "kick the habit1 for one day.
Sayre Darling, chairman of the Smokeout effort in
Lincoln, and others from the southeast office of the
American Cancer Society presented . the mayor with
buttons, literature, posters, candy cigarettes, T-shirts
and pledge cards publicizing the campaign.
Darling said the Smokeout is in its third year.
Smokeout Central will be in the American Cancer
Office at 48th and A Street Nov. 15 to offer support,
counseling, and information about the smoking clinics
held there twice a year, These booths will be
maintained by people who have quit smoking.
Darling explained, pledge cards, can be taken by
smokers. The smokers are supposed to pledge that they
will not '"light up" on the dav of the smokeout. Most
of the pledges are made through soliciting and contests
in businesses, Darling said.
To increase public awareness of the event.
Eromotion material, pledge cards, buttons, stickers and
terature will be distributed to Lincoln businesses and
offices. NU Meds are helping with this distribution of
materials. Public service announcements are planned
for television and radio. .
On the university campus, Darling said , the admin,
istration, faculty and livjng units are being supplied
with the same materials.
Forty percent of all dwelling fires are caused by
smoking and smoking materials, said Dallas Johnson;
Lincoln Fire Chief. Proposed legislation will be intro
duced in the future for production of a cigarette that
burns in five minutes just lying in an ashtray. Most
cigarettes now take 15 to 19 minutes to burn.he said.
Mayor Boosalis said she smoked socially and for
"kind of a kick" when she was younger but added that
she decided to quit in her late twenties after her hus
band did.
