daily nebraskan page 13 JV football is 44; still not playing at full potential thursday, november 8, 1979 By Paul Martin The Husker junior varsity football team will attempt to end their season on a winning note Friday afternoon when they travel to Manhattan to challenge the Kansas State reserves. "We're going to be ready to show everybody what kind of a ball team we are," starting offensive left tackle Dan Schmuecker said. Although the squad has suffered only one setback in four games this year, a 19-13 loss to Missouri last Friday in Columbia, the team has yet to play to its full potential, according to Head Coach Frank Solich . "We didn't play as well as we're capable of (against Missouri)," Solich said. "We haven't put together a complete ball game vet." Schmuecker, a 6 foot 4 inch, 255 lb. freshman from Omaha Burke, said a "lack of concentration" contributed to the problems of the team, particularly the offensive line, against Missouri. Solich said the line played inconsistently against the Tigers and were guilty of several illegal motion penalties which hindered Husker drives. WHEN THE TEAM worked out of poor field position-which plagued them most of the after-noon-they were hurt by motion infractions that caused long yardage situations, according to Solich. In an effort to correct that Solich said the team is "working on coming off the ball" and on eliminating "motion-type penalties" this week in preparation for the Wildcats. "Monday we spent almost the whole practice just coming off the ball," Schmuecker said. Solich said they also were working at holding on to the football, something they didn't do well against Missouri. DO O O SEE) Pro-Game Party at -. Solich said he wasn't happy with the fact that the team didn't "progress well enough to beat Missouri," but added that he was pleased with the squad's overall effort. Solich said the K-State junior varsity would probably play several upperclassmen just as Missouri, who played a few seniors, did against the Cornhuskers. But the nearly all freshmen Husker JV squad has been at a disadvantage from an experience standpoint in all of their games this year. Facing an older, more experienced Wildcat club will be nothing new to them. KANSAS STATE had a game against Missouri cancelled earlier this year so it is difficult to size up the task facing the young Huskers, according to Solich. Schmuecker said the offensive line '"just has to sit in Wrestling Continued from Page 12 FEHRS SAID HE likes the mark system because it allows each wrestler -two matches. Even if a wrest ler doesn't win, he said, he still gains experience from two matches. "We told the wrestlers to get some individual goals and then try and make them realistic goals as well," he said. However, Assistant Coach Mona Smith said there's nothing wrong with shooting for the top. "Each guy should say to himself 'I want to win my own weight.' It's a goal that everyone should set for themselves," he said. But, Fehrs said if a wrestler gets beat by a top seeded wrestler, he shouldn't be discouraged. - The hottest new poprock group play and sing hits like "Candy-0"; "All I Can Do"; "Let's Go"; "Night Spots"; "Dangerous", and many more in this two hour special.. He said there is a tendency to lose concentration after seeing the same plays over and over again, which shows up as mental errors in games. Solich said the team is working towards putting together a complete ball game against the Wildcats. "The coaches said we'd cut out the fancy stuff this week and take it right at them and see what we have," Schmuecker said. Kansas State will be looking for their second win against two losses while the Huskers will try to finish at 4-4-1. The game will be played at KSU and is scheduled to start at 1:00 pjn. "IT JUST SHOWS he didn't really have a realistic grasp on what he did initially," he said. Two Huskers have been seriously injured during UNL's long practice season, Fehrs said. Senior Agron Vasha re-injured his neck, and freshman Tom Dobbs underwent back surgery for a ruptured disc Wednesday. Last year, when Vasha injured his neck the first time, he missed about half the season, Fehrs said. Doctors thought he would be able to wrestle this year, but because it was a nerve injury it can't be treated very well, he said. Fehrs said he thought Dobbs' back was slightly injured before practice started in September, and then was aggravated during practice. " raOO. G FDD.
