Wednesday, november 7, 1979 daily nebraskan page 1 1 GLC surveys alumni center interest By Kevin Field Nearly 80 percent of the students surveyed recently by ASUN's Government Liaison Committee reported they use the metered parking lots located on the proposed site of the Wicke Alumni Center. The survey was undertaken to determine student needs, interest and feasibility of an alumni center, accord ing to Brad Belt, GLC member. "We wanted to see what students knew about the cen ter and if they felt alumni-student, relations were important," Belt said. ' GLC randomly selected 125 students above.' the fresh man level and contacted them by phone. Of those, 31 were seniors, 44 were'juniors and 50 were sophomores. Four questions were asked during the interview, lie first concerned whether the student knew where the pre sent alumni center is. That knowledge was found to in crease as the class of the student increased. Although only 16 percent of the sophomores knew where the center is located, 43.8 percent of the juniors knew the location and 70.96 percent of the seniors knew where the center is. Overall, 39.2 percent knew where the center is. . 7 The second question dealt with how the students viewed the importance of student-alumrii interaction. Only 3.2 percent of the students said they thought student-alumni interaction was highly important. Most said they thought the interaction was somewhat to moderately important, but 15.2 percent said they did not think student-alumni interaction was important. The third question' asked if the student parked in either of the two metered parking lots that will be affect ed by the construction of a new alumni center. The percentage of students that used the lots increased with each class. Of the sophomores, 16 percent said they used the lots, while 25 percent of the juniors said they did, and 48.38 percent of the seniors said they did. . ' ' These increases, according to Belt, could be caused by the larger number of older students that live off campus and commute to classes during the day. The final question dealt with how the student would choose to finance a new parking garage, if one were to be built, to make up for spaces lost to the new alumni center if it is built on the proposed site. The students were given three choices; double parking fees, charge $50 per space per month or increase student fees. 89.6 percent of the students went for the $50 per space method of financing, while a meager .8 percent liked the idea of doubling parking fees and only 2.4 percent said they thought an increase in student fees was a good idea. "My feeling is that if the Alumni Center is adamant to building a new center, then they should be responsible for meeting an increase in parking costs," Belt said. Although a Central Planning Committee has re commended the site, the regents have yet to give final approval.
