Tradition put aside,
NU female regent?

Since the formation of. the NU Board of Regents in
1869, only one woman has served on the board in a voting
postition. '
Mrs. J. G. Elliott was appointed to the board to take
her husband's position after his death in 1974. She served
in that position for eight months.
During that time, Mrs. Elliott said, she was treated
graciously and respectfully. She said she wouldn't be a bit
surprised if a woman was elected to the board in the near
future but added that a woman shouldn't obtain the
position just because she is a woman.
Elliott said it is important to have "thinking" people
on the board. The race and sex of the members doesn't
matter. Men can be just as perceptive on subjects as
women, she said.
Helen Lang, a secretary in the election division of the"
office of the Nebraska Secretary of State, said only two
women have had a nonvoting student regent position. One
of these was appointed.
There is the possibility of another woman student
regent in the near future. Katie Rinn and Mike Smith, will
be in a run-off election for the presidency of the UNO
student body on Nov. 15 and 16. If Rinn wins this
election she will be the second woman ever elected to
membership on the Board of Regents.
Rinn said she can see why people might believe she
would be in an awkward position as the only female on
the board but added that she has met all of the members
of the board and worked with some university
administrators and has developed a rapport with them.
Rinn said she doesn't mean the students on the board
and the voting board members haven't been representative
but feels the job can only be enhanced by having a woman
on the board. She said as a woman she might be able to
view problems from a perspective other members might
not.
She said statistics have shown that about 1 5 percent of
voters will only vote for the male nominee in an election
with a candidate from both sexes, Rinn said she hasn't,
given up on that 1 5 percent, and added that every student
is a potential vote.
Within the past 10 years only one woman, Mrs. Fred A.
Seaton, has run for a voting board member position, Lang
said. Ririn said this might be because qualified women feel
it would be too hard to get elected.
There are no restrictions to keep women from running,
according to Regent James Moylan. There are women on
the state board of education and their voting districts are
identical to the regents voting districts, he said.
In the Big Eight, Oklahoma University is the only other
school with an all male board. All other Big Eight schools,
with the exception of Iowa State University, have one or -two
female and seven or eight male board members. Iowa
State has three female and six male board members.
Two students killed
in crash Saturday
Two UNL students died and a third was critically
injured in a two truck collision early Saturday, according
to the Nebraska State Patrol.
Engineering student Roger Fullerton, 20, Cody, and
agriculture major Randy Adams, 19, Crete, both fresh
men, were "killed while riding in the back of a pickup
truck. t
The truck ran into a parked semi-trailer truck at 1:55
a.m. Saturday on Interstate 80 near the Waverly exchange.
The semi was unoccupied.
A State Patrol spokesman said the driver of the pickup,
sophomore agriculture major Timothy J. Nollette, 20,
may have fallen asleep before the collision. Nollette was
treated for minor injuries and released.
As of 9:30 pjn. Sunday, a St. Elizabeth's Community
Health Center spokesman reported that Pamela J. Smith,
an 18-year-old freshman from Elsmere, was in critical
condition. James Marshall, 20, of Lincoln, was listed in
serious condition.
