Fans feel deia vn in tense Husker win

COLUMBIA-As long as shadows started stretching
across Faurot Field late Saturday afternoon, Nebraska
fans watched the chilling effects of a Missouri drive to the
Nebraska U-yard line with three seconds remaining.
A 23-20 Nebraska lead wasn't much comfort and the
bitter memory of a 35-31 defeat last year sent visions of
another national championship going down the drain,
A hush settled over the stadium as Missouri quarter
back Phil Bradley came out of the huddle and lined up
behind center.
Warren Powers, a football mentor Husker Coach Tom
Osborne had not beaten in two tries, had declined a tying
field goal and elected to go for six and the win.
"We thought they'd go for the field goal, but Missouri
has got a lot of pride," said Husker Derrie Nelson who
made the final sack on Bradley to sew up the game,
"1 just counted to three and popped into the open on
top of him," said defensive end Nelson, "I think he was in
disbelief when he saw me, but he was waiting for his
receivers to get open like he should have "
POWERS HAD NO regrets with the 23-30 loss and his
decision to go for the win,
Hartung wins title
All-American Nebraska sophomore Jim Hartung won
the still rings and tied for the floor exercise individual title
with defending NCAA champion Ron Gallimore of Iowa
State Saturday night in the individual finals of the Big
Eight Invitational at Kansas.
Hartung had to scratch from the competition on the
parallel' Bar and horizontal bar competition due to a
reoccurnng wrist injuiy, . ,
Othev Buskers finishing in the top ten included Scott
Johnson and Kevin Dunkley, fourth and fifth, respectively
in the rings, Steve Elliot and Hartung finished fifth and
sixth in the vault while Elliot finished third in the floor
exercise and Phil Cahoy, tied far second-in the pommel -horse,
The Huskers will compete next in the Windy City
Invitational Nov, 16-17 at the University of Illinois,
Chicago-Circle campus, in a 12-team meet involving the
nation's top 12 teams,

"Our football team wasn't ready to play a team like
Nebraska for a tie. I don't think my kids wanted to go for
the field goal, they wanted the win."
Missouri's final play was designed to get running back
James Wilder open across the middle, a play that had been
successful all day.
"I was looking for Wilder across the middle but he go
got knocked down," Bradley said. "By the time he got
back up, we were in trouble."
Missouri was in trouble at half time and most of the
third quarter until the closing seconds when the Tigers
scored 14 points in eight seconds to tie the game at 20-20.
The tying touchdown came on a 17-yard fumble return
after a Missouri kickoff to Husker wingback Anthony
Steels.
STEELS WAS HIT on a jarring tackle by Tiger Ron
Fellowes and Orlando Pope picked the ball off in the air,
scampering into the end zone untouched,
"It just showed up in the air," Pope said, "Somebody
gave him a pretty good lick and it was just one of those
situations where I was in the right spot at the right time."
Nebraska responded to the tie with substitutes Jeff
Quinh and I-back Craig Johnson driving the Huskers to
Missouri's three for a first and goal, Dean Sukup's go
ahead field goal came after efforts to score by Johnson
and fullback Andra Franklin failed,
'The options started opening up and the line was really
blowing people out," said Quinn who had replaced
quarterback -Tim Hager the final drive because of his
optioning ability.
"We knew we had to do-it," Quinn added,
Johnson, who had replaced Jarvis Redwine after a first
half injury, gained 47 yards in seven carries the final drive,
THE LINEBACKERS WERE flowing fast and I was
breaking back underneath them " Johnson said. "We
knew we had to get some points on the board and it felt
good when the holes started opening up,"
Nebraska led from their first possession of the game
after a Redwine touchdown.
A 15-yard penalty on Missouri for having too many
men on the field set up an onside kick attempt from
Missouri's 45 on the following Nebraska kickoff, ,
The Huskers were unable to capitalize on Tim Smith's
recovery of the onside kick, however, Sukup's 45-yard
field goal attempt was wide,
Missouri scored early in the second quarter on a
one-yard run by running back Gerry Ellis but the extra
point attempt was wide,
Nebraska came back with a 68-yard drive in 1 1 plays
with Hager going over from the one, Sukup's 24-yard field
goal before the half gave Nebraska a 1 7-6 lead going into
the lockerroom,
Emotions flared several times during the game with a
controversial call just before the half raising barrages
toward the officials from both benches,
Spikers split in tourney
The UNL volleyball team split with Utah and Michigan
State and lost to UCLA in pool play Saturday in the
National Invitational Tournament at Pauley Pavillion,
UNL won its first game against Utah 15-4 and lost 10
' 15, Michigan State won the first game 15-3, and then the'
Huskers came back with a 15-9 game win, UCLA took
both games, 15-3, 17-15, and advanced as the pool winner
to the semifinals.
MISSOURI WAS WORKING from its 42 on third and
five when defensive end L.C. Cole broke through to sack
Bradley. As he was falling, he unloaded a pass which was
intercepted by tackle BUT Barnett at the Missouri 36.
One official ruled the interception was valid while an
another maintained the play was dead and had blown his
whistle to discontinue play.
Both coaches aired their displeasure at the officiating
before Missouri was given possession on its own 25.
"I'm going to talk to the conference office about it "
said Osborne after the game. "Usually I wait until Monday
but I will definitely talk to them Sunday."
Husker scoring in the second half was limited to a pair
of field goals by Sukup with the second one putting
Nebraska on top 20-6 in the third quarter.
The Tigers came roaring back with a 4-yard touchdown
pass from Bradley to tight end Andy Gibler with 23
seconds remaining in the third quarter. The two-point
conversion failed leaving the score 20-12.
EIGHT SECONDS LATER, the score was tied 20-20
after Pope's fumble return and a successful conversion
pass from Bradley to tight end Tim Hornof in the corner
of the end zone.'
"We knew they would be good," Osborne said after the
game, 'They have 15 starters back and we had 11, They
were a deserving team and played a good game." '
Nebraska racked up 345 total yards with 315 coming
on the ground. The Huskers had 66 offensive plays
compared to Missouri's 80 with total net Tiger yardage of
269.
Missouri's passing attack by Bradley totaled 170 of
those yards.
"Bradley was doing a good job of reading our coverage
and was calling a lot of audibles at the line," said left
corner back Ric Lindquist,
Osborne also said that the Missouri game would serve
well in preparing the Huskers for their , final three Big
Eight contests.
Nebraska plays Kansas State, who beat Missouri 19-3,
in Manhattan next Saturday.
