Although the shutdown may save the university's
fuel bill, the plan cannot be called a conservation measure.
Employees at home or forced into taking mid-winter
vacations will be burning more home heat and transporta
tion fuels. The. plan is simply a design to stretch the uni
versity's budget at the expense of the lowest paid people
in the university.
The clerical staff is, of course, largely female, with C
line employees at UNL traditionally as much as 95
percent women. Perhaps the administration's indifference
to the effect of the shutdown on their lives is part of the
same sexist frame of mind that is willing to play politics
with women's bodies and the right of doctors and patients
to make abortion decisions. Almost all the UNL funding
for the city campus daycare facility was cancelled in
1978. Women are clearly the group within the university
1984. . .

As this significant fifth anniversary approaches, it is
worthwhile to reflect on a few of the major changes
caused by UNL's total loss of financial support in
1979-80.
The most drastic change was the relocation of East
Campus to the grassy area between Selleck, the Nebraska
Union, and Love Library. The move eliminated trans
portation costs and guaranteed maximum usage of City
Campus facilities. The livestock have, during these- five
years, been trained in many areas formerly dependent on
maintenance crews, and the East Campus buildings were
sold at profit to wealthy foreign investors.
The Union Ballroom was granted a liquor license and
became the Union Discotheque, generating enough annual
income from students to cover the total of all admini
strators' salaries." -
All UNL libraries are now open from 11:30 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. four days a week for students who simply can
not afford to space off required term papers and research
.projects. An attitude of haunted, desperation is required
fof admittance.
With4he blessing of the student body, all season foot
ball tickets are now sold by auction to the highest bidders.
To prevent discrimination, bidders are divided into cate
gories: 1) Rich students, 2) Poor students, 3) Rich alumni,
and 4) Potential scalpers.

who will be most directly exploited while the admini
stration wrestles with its tight budget.
No one in the university-staff, student, or
would deny the serious economic straits which are daily
damaging the quality of education and employment at
NU. but there is something wrong with the priorities
within the institution when it lays off employees and halts
research but continues to encourage expansion of pro
grams or such additions as the proposed College of
Veterinary Medicine.
The faculty and staff at NU could probably give the
crowd of people at Regent's Hall a whole set of new and
better ideas about how to manage things, and maybe we
all ought to do just that-through collective bargaining.
