NORML marijuana study needed
Research into the effects of marijuana on pregnant wo
men and women who are nursing should be done auickly,
the Nebraska State Coordinator for the National
Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws said Sun
day night.
Don Fielder said that almost all research done on the
effects of marijuana is on man, which means that definite
yes or no answers cannot be given to pregnant or nursing
women on whether marijuana is harmful.
"We have to tell them, "Don't smoke," because we
don't have any definite answers right now and that is a
pity," Fielder said.
' In a question-answer forum on "Marijuana - Issues and
Answers" sponsored by Cather-Pound-Neihardt Health
Aides, Fielder spoke on what NORML is doing and his
feelings on the decriminalization of marijuana. Dr.
Garland Bare, director of the Student Health Center, was
scheduled to talk also, but was not present for the forum.
Fielder said that NORML main priority is to make
marijuana available for medicinal benefits on a tight, limit
ed basis.
Studies of medical cases have shown that the potent
element in marijuana has helped relieve the nausea that
occurs with chemotherapy treatement of cancer and also
relieves the symptoms of glaucoma, a deterioration of the
optic nerve, Fielder said.
L.-iMr mM that the Nebraska Legislature has tint hart a
AVtW ww-- - w aw S
bill introduced calling for theraputic use of marijuana, but
that one should be introduced in the upcoming legislative
session. '
Fielder also said that more than $600 million in law
enforcement resources is spent annually on marijuana
arrests and prosecution, while the money could be put to
better use.
Instead of treating people caught with marijuana like
criminals, the money spent in prosecution should be
applied to the control of serious crime, Fiedler said.
'Marijuana users should not be considered criminals,"
Fielder said. "Marijuana is a gift God has given us from
the ground and its medicinal benefits have been used for
years."
