That's life, I suppose, when one "hits the sheets."
I believe that some further explanation is necessary, how
ever, for the record.
First of all, the story represented the student's view
point at length but did not give the professor the same
coverage, therefore, it is biased, The story gives the im
pression that we give courses in game-playing in the
School of Music, ,
I tried to explain my understanding of the method
ology to the reporter but she chose to ignore these
comments. The course has to do with the teaching of
music to children at the . elementary level. The pur
pose of the song-games is to teach musical concepts such
as rhythm and melody. Students are asked to participate
in these games, because as elementary teachers, this is
what they should be able to do.
The notion that the course is in playing games is a
misrepresentation and the reporter writing the story,
who apparently knows nothing about the subject, should
not have submitted the story without adequate coverage
of that point from the professor's viewpoint.
The statement that I "did not have the power to tell
instructors how to conduct their classes" is insufficient.
As Director of the School of Music, I am obviously
responsible for the "conduct" of classes in the School.
I construe that to mean that the teacher is present in the
classroom and that the course is being conducted in a
responsible manner. -
The methodology and the course content is definitely
another matter and my view was correctly quoted. I
would obviously be in violation of academic freedom were
I to prescribe the content and methodology of any pro
fessor's course in my unit.
If classroom conflicts arise it is my duty in the matter
to speak with the student and the professor involved. This
is the channel for arbitrating a problem and I do not know
of a further channel, unless it be the Dean's Office.
In any case, if I had knowledge that a course was being
conducted in an irresponsible or negligent manner, I
would intervene. Otherwise, it would be-in my opinion
totally out of line and a gross infringement of academic
freedom.
Conflicts between students and professors are as much
a part of academic life as conflicts are part of life in
general. In this case, I am convinced that the professor in
charge of the course-who has 40 years of experience in
teaching-is conducting the course in a responsible manner
and has professional reasons for doing so.
The rest is up to further arbitration, if that is possible.

Prophecies noted
The article, "Cataloging Prophecies," in the Oct. 19
Fathom section caught my attention. Of particular in
terest was the statement made by Joey Jochmans: "eight
prophets and psychics foresee economic chaos and star
vation in the United States beginning this year (1979)
and lasting for seven years."
I'm sure everyone is aware of the way the price of gold
skyrocketed this summer and of the unsteady value of the
dollar on foreign exchange markets. But I wonder how
many people realize how closely Jochmans' statement
parallels what was written in the Bible over 1 300 years
ago.
. Jesus said of the time immediately preceding His
second coming, that, "then there will be a great tribula
tion, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the
world until now, nor ever shall." (Matthew 24:21) This
tribulation will consist of two stages, the first lasting
1,260 days (3H years) and the second lasting 42 months
(3J4 years). (Revelation 11:2-3; 12:6; and 13:5) During
the second half of this tribuation, a "beast" will acquire
"great authority." (Revelation 13:2) (In Biblical pro
phecy, . "beast" is symbolic for dictator. Hitler
and Stalin would be examples of beasts.) This beast
"causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and
the poor, and the freemen and the slaves, to be given a
mark on their right hand, or on their forehead, and he
provides that no one should be able to buy or to sell,
except the one who has the mark." (Revelation 13: 16-17)
Regardless of whether or not you' believe in the Bible
or in psychics, the fact that both agree on a coming seven
year period of hardship should make you feel a little
uneasy.
