Curtain time is 8 p.m. Guitar book . . . Continued from Page 10 A few names pop up in places other than their own interviews. There are the guitarists who elicit the most glowing respect from their peers and whose influence in the field, is undisputed. Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Django Reinhardt and Andres Segovia might not fall as familiarly on the ear as a Clapton, Hendrix or King, but the book effectively points out their efforts to be some of the most influential, Their insights are some of the book's most valuable. Congratulations also are due for the people who con ducted the interviews found in these pages. It's most noticeable when they talked to guitarists from the rock ear. The relaxed line of questioning, with emphasis on technique, influence and artistry bring out a side of these performers' that is rarely seen when they are subjected to ambiguous and pointed questions from the rock media. The Guitar Player Book also provides the invaluable information for both the casual and business minded guitarist, with sections dedicated to choosing and collect ing guitars, how they are made, warranties, serial numbers, guitars and airlines, and a glossary of terms and addresses of major manufacturers. , THERE ALSO ARE inside tips on recording studios, careers in classical guitar, the role of session musicians, the business of playing the guitar and even the recording of commercial jingles. Especially provocative is a piece originally found in the January 1978 issue of Guitar Player which featured a symposium of the heads of such guitar manufacturers as Martin, Gibson, Fender and Ovation. Entitled "Is There A Future For The American Guitar?" it reveals a pride in craftsmanship generally not attributed to American in dustry. v The Guitar Player Book is an attractively put together, highly readable, valuable source of information. It's a must for the serious guitarist, and highly recommended for anyone on down to the music affictianado in general. The tone of the book is summed up in a quote by the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia. When asked if . there were any disadvantages to music from the particular perspective of the guitar, Garcia replied: ; "For me, I think the only danger is being too much in love with guitar playing."
