UNL participating
in Japanese exchange
UNL will again take part next year in two exchange
programs with Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan, and
Sophia University in Tokyo. The programs wiU allow stu
dents to receive UNL credit while studying in Japan.
Continuing grant from the Kawaskai Motors Corpora
tion will support travel expenses for one to three UNL
students participating in either program.
Competition for the 1979-80 awards is open until
January 23, 1980. Interested students can contact Pro
Peter Cheng, 541 Oldfather Hall.
Cheng said that it is not necessary for students partici
pating to learn Japanese, as courses will be taught in
English, but said a knowledge of the language would be
helpful. Students will enroll in courses in Japanese art,
culture, society, history, politics, economics, business and
language.
Undergraduates in any college with 3.0 grade point
averages are eligible and can apply for a Kawasaki travel
award. Special consideration will be given to students wlo
have had Japanese language or culture instruction or
previous 1 personal experience in Japan. Recipients of
Kawasaki travel grants will be selected by a faculty com
mittee. - ,
The Kawasaki travel grants will cover only the cost of
round trip air transportation from Lincoln to Tokyo or
Nagoya. Students must pay all other expenses.
Negotiations with Nanzan University officials are under
way on reciprocal tuition and room and board arrange
ments. If both schools agree on the proposed exchange
agreement, Cheng said UNL students would pay the same
costs as they would for a year here.
