We, as instructors in the English Department and mem
bers of the committee that represents the Junior staff
within that department, wish to express our concern over
the Daily Nebraskan's coverage of the alleged exclusion
of men from English 253A. We are not writing primarily
to protest what many consider to be the Inaccurate and
unprofessional way in which the story has been handled
nor to give yet another version of the "truth." It is
becoming increasingly clear that there may never be exact
agreement on just what did happen in that classroom.
We are writing rather to tell the university community
what we Jo know with certainty: that the English Depart
ment faculty overwhelmingly supports open enrollment
policies in its classes; that the department has shown and
continues to show its commitment to Affirmative Action
and Equal Opportunity hiring in the past five years the
department has hired eight women and four men includ
ing two black faculty members-and finally that the
English Department is outstanding in the University for
the wide range of courses it offers which focus on the
experience of groups like women, blacks, native Ameri
cans, gays and Chicanos. Our continued wide offerings in
areas which often explore the experience of men, whites
and other traditionally more visible members of our
culture demonstrate our intention to examine in
literature matters that are of vital interest to as many
parts of the student body as possible.
We, the members of the committee, are personally
involved in working with other faculty in the department
to foster ,and extend these policies. Although there is
much to 'be done, we feci strongly that there is also
much we may be justifiably proud of in dlir department
and we hope that these things will not be obscured in the
heated controversies that this situation has created.
