Four years changes friendships, lifestyle and outlook
It's kind of funny, but it seems that
through the years friends don't really
change, but the nature of the friendship
does.

Four years of college doesn't seem like a
lot of time for an evolution, but in a sense
it really is.
As a freshman, I can remember the high
light of my week would be walking down
to the Watcrholc on a Thursday night with
a friend I would corral into going with me.
After convincing the doorman that we
were really 22 and had just gotten off work
and hadn't brought our I.D.s with us, we
would step into the bar scene and never see
each other until we stumbled home toget
her at the end of the night.
We thought Lite beer was the greatest
invention since test files and used essays
and lived day and night in painters' pants
and T-shirts.
And it seemed like we were always in
trouble with someone. Whether it was
running rampant through dormitory halls
banging on doors, or singing Jingle Bells
over the intercom at 2 a.m., we were never
on the good side of anybody.
Surprisingly, however, we never flunked
out or were kicked out of school. We even
managed to get fairly decent grades. But
our parents almost disowned us when they
saw all of our checks written to Lincoln
bars.
I guess the evolution began when we
realized we were in school for a purpose
other than supporting Lincoln's biggest
business.
We started staying home three out of
four week nights, and eventually resorted
to staying home on Thursday nights too.
School became interesting, and we rea
lized its importance in our futures.
It dawned on us how precious time is,
and how short four years really are. Our
time was spent, not at the bars, but at
work and at school.
And I guess what led to this realization
was when my friend asked me to be a guest
speaker to her high school English class.
What a role change.
1 suppose chalk it up to life in the Big
Eight, or in other Homestead action.
But I really think it's just a part of
growing up.

My second fear is that people, might think Pm really
the way your article made me sound. I don't begrudge Le
roy Critcher's Trio, or the South Street Shakers, or the
lleartmurniurs the money they make on gigs. I don't be
grudge Hidden Valley the money they made from the sale
of beer. So how can I say that "I'm disappointed because
the bands all played for money. . It's an indication
that community radio in Lincoln is not as vital as it

should be. It would have been great if the bands could
have honestly supported KZUM -because we are the only
station of our kind in Nebraska. So who am I disappoint
ed in? I'm disappointed that sometimes the art of radio at
KZUM is not artistic, but also that sometimes the most
caring, revealing, poignant, entertaining, educational and
interesting moments in radio go unnoticed because KZUM
hasn't got enough money to promote these programs to
the people who would like to or need to hear them; be
cause we don't have the money to fix equipment, and hire
enough people to demystify radio to all the people in Lin
coln who could use it.
