Sonne game traffic to be rerouted
DyKathyStokebrand
Assistant Chief John Miller of the Lincoln Police said
in a press conference Thursday that street closings will
cause some football traffic to be rerouted for the rest of
the home games this season.
Miller said the reason for the changes is a bridge that is
out on North First Street. He said approximately 380 cars
used that street to reach Cornhusker Highway. An officer
will be at the Sunvalley Boulevard and Cornhusker High
way intersection to route traffic north or south.
Miller said there was a lot of space to park at the fair
grounds and the university has buses going continuously
between the stadium and the fairgrounds.
There are alternatives, Miller said. After home games,
both .10th and 14th streets become one-way streets going
north. He encouraged those going to Omaha to take 14th
Street north to Cornhusker Highway or Superior Street
and then on to Interstate 80. For those going west he sug
gested going north on 14th Street to Cornhusker Highway
or Fletcher Avenue and then to Interstate 80.

Rick Had en, Lincoln traffic engineer, said that com
puterized lights on O Street, Cornhusker Highway, and
Capital Parkway have been especially helpful. He said
there are 80 computerized lights 4n Lincoln with special
light patterns for pre- and postgame traffic. He said the
computerized light control center has direct contact with
officers on the street so if a timing change needs to be
mae, it can be done relatively quickly.
Miller explained an experimental project that the
police are trying for the first time this Saturday.
To prevent larceny and vandalism in the parking areas
six volunteers from the community with CB units will be
traveling in vehicles and on foot to be the "eyes and ears"
of the police.
One officer will monitor all CB responses given by the
volunteers. Two other policemen also will be available for
these calls.
The volunteers will supplement the current police force
used on game days.
Miller said the results will then be evaluated with the
volunteers.
