Nebraska psycliedg Iowa spirits low;
coaches and players try mind game
After hitting 25 of 32 gamei for 78.1 percent last
week, Including UCLA'l 3141 Upset Special over Purdue,
the Daily Nebraskafl prognostlcator contemplated retiring
with a two-week season record of 42141 for 73 percent,
Ice barfknecEit
A couple of grumbling Iowa fans said they felt that.re
tlrement should be forced after we picked the Hawkeyes
to be destroyed by Oklahoma last week.
Iowa fans will probably grumble even louder after
seeing this week's first pick!
NEBRASKA AT lOWA-Thls should be titled "Mind
Games " Tom Osborne has his doctorate in psychology.
Ilawkeye Coach Hayden Pry has his degree in psychology
from Baylor. Unfortunately for Pry, all the psychology In
the world won't help the Hawks avoid a third straight set
back this time against the nation's leading offensive team,
Nebraska. Even another aerial attack like Utah State
launched last week won't enable the physically-beat'Up,
emotionally-spent Iowa team to make this one close.
Nebraska 38, Iowa 10.
NOTRE DAME AT PURDUE-Notre Dame is sky-high
after beating Michigan on the road last week. Purdue Is
sulking after losing to UCLA, but they vividly remember
last year's loss to the Irish. The odds-makers are calling
this a toss-up, but even the stingy Irish defense won't be
able to overcome the Boilermaker's home-field advantage,
revenge motive and Mark Herrmann. Purdue 17, Notre
Dame 10.
KANSAS AT MICHIGAN-Notre Dame may be sky
high, but Michigan is boiling mad about losing last week.
So who gets to walk into Ann Arbor this week and absorb
the punishment-the lowly Kansas Jayhawks. Coach Don
Fambrough is going to wish he had stayed in retirement
after witnessing this "Wipeout of the Week." Michigan 56,
Kansas 8.
Athletics reviewed
The Athletic Review Committee will meet Sept. 26 to
determine athletic program changes since the 197576
school year from data they are gathering.
Chancellor Roy Young appointed the committee to
determine whether the total athletic program effectively
serves the Interests and abilities of both male and female
students, Alma Homze, assistant professor of elementary
education, said.
The primary areas the committee will evaluate, Homze
said, are provision of equipment, allocation of grants,
. scholarships and other financial aids, provision of medical
facilities and coaching and academic tutoring. ,
Homze said -the committee was formed due to a provi
sion in Title IX The provision orders equality In men's
and women's sports.
The meeting will be closed to non-committee members,
but oral or written comments and suggestions about the
athletic program can be made to the following committee
members: Homze; Sports Information Director Don
Bryant; Assistant Women's Athletic Director Barbara Hib
ner; Affirmative Action Officer Bradley Munn; Assistant
to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Suzanne
Brown; Assistant Vice Chancellor for Business and
Finance Robert Levitt; Professor of Journalism Wilma
Crumley; Professor of Finance Keith Broman; Associate
Professor of Mathematics Sylvia Wiegand and students
Laurie Anderson and Sue Ellis.
TEXAS AIM AT PENN STATE-The Nittany Liom
found a diamond in the rough last week in freshman
walk-on Curt Warner, the Associated Press' back of the
week. Prior to the season openers, people were expecting
this to be one of the year's top games. But the Aggies have
been a disappointment, dropping games to BYU and
Baylor. The Lions will tune-up for their trip to Lincoln
with a solid win. Penn State 27, Texas A&M 13.
NORTH TEXAS STATE AT SMU-What do Terry
iraiishaw, Bob Griese, Ken Anderson and SMU quarter
jack Mike Ford have in common? All went down with in
, uries last week. Mustang hopes for a banner year might
urn gone down with the 6-5, 238-pound Ford, who is but
' for the season with knee surgery. SMU has loads of young,
explosive talent. But the loss of a veteran quarterback
may give Jerry Moore's Mean Green more than a fighting
chance. In the "Upset Special of the Week": North Texas
State 23, SMU 20.
