Draft registration may still go to Senate
WASHINGTON-Despite overwhelming defeat in the
House, an effort to bring back military draft registration
may be put to a vote in the Senate.
The House rejected 252-163 late Wednesday a propos
ed order to renew draft registration for 18-year-old men
starting Jan. 2, 1981. Instead, it directed President Carter
to study the situation.
Carter has already said draft registration is not needed
now and Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill predicted that with
the- House vote. 'That'll be the end of it." But an aide to
Sen. Sam Nunn said he believes the Georgia Democrat still
will put a similar bill to renew draft registration to a vote
in the Senate.
Neo-Nazis jailed
BUECKEBURG, West Germany-A West German judge
sentenced six neo-Nazis Thursday to prison terms of four
to 1 1 years on charges they organized or participated in
right-wing criminal activity planned by their American
leader.
The prison sentences followed the first major trial of
neo-Nazis in this country and came after a government
rnnrt warned that such croups were adoutlna termriit
tactics in an effort to overthrow democracy.
After a four-month trial, the court concluded that the
six men followed the orders of self-styled U.S. Nazi leader
Gary Rex Lauck, of Lincoln.
School starts
CLEVELAND-School officials said they were eager to
get on with the business of education as they opened
classes today to all of their 90,000 pupils for the first time
since a limited busing plan began this week.
Up to 9,500 pupils were scheduled to be bused across
town Thursday, with some rides taking more than an
hour.
