daily nebraskan page 1 1 Faculty Senate links tuition with quality of teaching efforts Wednesday, September 12, 1979 Dy Michelle Carr The UNL Faculty Senate Tuesday pas sed a resolution to recommend to the NU Board of Regents that a part of the pro posed 10 percent tuition increase be used to increase the quality of teaching. The resolution, presented by Senate President William Campbell, stated that a portion of the increase in tuition be used to increase the Teaching Council's budget. Campbell said the Teaching Council's purpose is to improve teaching methods and provide training programs for teaching assistants. Campbell said , the resolution was re commended by ASUN. He said there is "concern among some (students) that the increase be used for educational quality." Campbell discussed the increase with ASUN President Bud Cuca and Campbell suggested that the increase be put back into the Teaching Council, he said. Cuca agreed with the resolution, Campbell said. J. A. Fagerstrom proposed to amend the resolution to include funds for reasearch in addition to the Teaching Council. Budget... Schwartzkopf said the fact that the university has received lower budgets than it has requested for the past two years should be looked at when determining the Sen. Paul Olson, who represents the College of Arts and Sciences, disagreed with the amendment because studies have shown that some researchers devote too much time to research and not enough to teaching. 'The students are asked to pay a fairly high tuition to we should pass it (the resolution) as it is," Olson said. The amendment failed. . George Sturgeon, representing the College of Arts and Sciences, said the resolution should not pass because other areas of educational quality were not researched and not enough information was gathered on other possible areas that could use the tuition funds. In other action, the Senate discussed a report on the grade change controversy, which concerned a student-professor dis pute over a grade. The Senate passed a resolution that entitled the Academic Freedom and Tenure committee to act as a fact-finding committee to investigate the history of the case, the apparent violations and the awarding of grades and degrees. final budget.
