Utah State takes the field in Nebraska's Memorial Stadium this Satur day, many people will be watching the Aggies' number 80, Rulon Jones. Jones is Utah State's All-America candi date at defensive tackle. The 67, 265 pound senior will lead the Aggie defense against last year's Big Eight co-champion Nebraska Cornhuskers. Last year "Too Tough"-as his team mates call him-led Utah State with 104 tackles. Aggie head coach Bruce Snyder said Jones, who was an All-PCAA first teamer last year, "has a tremendous attitude about getting to the football. He truly thinks he can make every play." "Physically, considering all he has going for him, he'll scare you to death," Snyder said. "His speed is extraordinary for a man his size (4.7 seconds for 40 yards) and the combination of his quickness and unusual strength make it impossible to block him one-on-one. It would be foolish to try." "IN THE TIME I've been here, we haven't had an athlete who was able to perform on such a high level on such a con sistent basis," Snyder said. Nebraska offensive line coach, Cletus Fischer, said right tackle Dan Steiner will be liried up against Jones. "Steiner's about a foot shorter than Jones. It's going to look like Mutt and Jeff out there," Fischer said. "We expect Dan to be able to handle Jones, if he doesn't we'll put someone in there who can ," he said . "We won't change our game plan be cause of Jones,", Fischer said. "We'll just run our regular offense, if we see we can't handle him then we'll have to change things. "Steiner is very strong and agile for his size," he said. "Dan's a good technique football player and very knowledgeable at his position." STEINER EXPLAINED what Fischer meant by being a good technique player. "I'm not very big or tall but I can play well against bigger guys because I use good technique. I have to step in the right places and get my head where I want it. This helps you do half your job " Steiner aid. Steiner a 6-1 ,255 pound senior from Columbus said he feels he can handle Jones despite starting his first game for the Huskers. "I'm going to hold my own against Jones," he said. "He's big and tall and I'm short so I'm going to have to stay low on him when I block," Steiner said. "If I try to go up on him he'll be able to control me and he'll push me around." He said playing against Jones will defin itely be a challenge for him . "NOT ONLY IS HE BIG, he's strong and pretty quick. There are also stories of him being mean," Steiner said. "You know the guy's good if they build him up the way they do." Steiner said the Huskers will stick to their regular game plan and won't run away from Jones. "We don't run away from anyone too often," he said. "A lot of times you want to run right at a good player." Utah State uses a five-man defensive line similar to Nebraska's so Jones won't always be across from him, according to Steiner. "It depends on what defensive set they call, he might be headup on me or on my inside or outside shoulder," he said. "We won't double team him. If I can't do the job then I'm sure they'll put some one in who can or else we'll make adjust ment," Steiner said. Both Mike Bruce and Dan Hurley are listed behind Steiner on second team at right tackle and may see some action on Saturday. "STEINER'S BACKUP, Mike Bruce has been playing pretty well, we have a lot of things to find out about our offensive line. Well put people in who can get the job done," Fischer said. "Right now our offensive line is pretty well set for the first game, after that it de pends on how they play." "We had to make a decision somewhere so these guys can begin to work together," Fischer said. "It's important they work well together, they have to know each other's tendencies." Steiner said he won't be the only offen sive lineman starting his first Husker game. UNL volleyball coach Terry Pettit said the large turnout was because he invited all Nebraska high school volley ball players to the games. " , Pettit said he was pleased with the entiie team's performance, although he noted that Ann Haberman, Terri Kanouse, Reba Gobier and Krys Miles played exceptionally well." "Reba played as well as she ever has, Pettit said. Next week Pettit's squad travels to Denton, Tex. to play. Texas Women's University Thursday and compete in the Mean Green Invitational Friday and Saturday. . ' - . He said Houston, Lamar, Texas Arlington and Texas A & M, which are all rated In the top twenty, will be in the tournament. "Houston will be exceptionally tough because they have three players over 60, Pettit said. ' By Ron Powell King of the rail, knee tackle football and crab cageball may be obscure forms of recreation now, but UNL Students may have the opportunity to play these games on campus soon, according to UNLs new recreation coordinator. Stan Campbell said these and other "fun sports" were among those discussed at the intramural manager's meeting two weeks ago. "They all won't be able to be instituted right away," Campbell said. "Because of the budget, we are limited as to what we can do this year. We should be able lo have one or two of them next year. Campbell, , 27, came to UNL from Western Illinois" University where he was coordinator of club sports, assistant intra mural director ' and ; physical education instructor for thr?e years. Campbell said jie has been pleased with his new jdb so far. , There is a pretty good intramural pro gram here at Nebraska," Campbell said. "It is based on competitive team sports, which is good." . ACCORDING TO RECREATION De partment figures, more than half of all UNL students participate in some sort of. intramural program, but Campbell, said he feels that the intramural program lacks fun" sports such as those mentioned above. Adding these sports to the program would be easy, he said, "In intramuralj, you can modify rules to accommodate Us participants and facili ties," Campbell said. Campbell said one of his goals will be to get more places for recreation at UNL "Our recreational facilities are not up to par with other schools in the Big Eight or other major, colleges throughout the nation," Campbell said. "A recreational building built just for students and faculty is badly needed." CAMPBELL SAID that since a feasibi lity study has not been done yet, he is not sure what would be included in a new recreation building. He said racquetball courts and a weight room, appear to be the most urgent needs.. Campbell said the only racquetball courts on campus are at the fieldhouse and are controlled by the athletic department. He added it was -great" that the athletic department allows student use of the courts, but that the students should have their own courts. During the winter, he added, the courts are-normally reserved within ftfe minutes after the intramural office opens. . Campbell said the need for the new recreation building is part of an American recreation interest boom . I think the recreation interest boom is fantastic, Campbell said. "It is a healthful demand by students and I am dad to see It Campbell said ItV going to tike "approval and effort by lots of people" to get a new recreation building. "Both students and faculty will have to recognize the need for it," Campbell said.
