Dale Wojtasek told the ASUN senate during last nlghts meeting. The program does not exist for reasons that are totally unfair to students," he said. Although the senate discussed the speakers issue,- no formal action was taken during the meeting. In 1978, the NU Board of Regents banned the use of student fee money for political and Ideological speakers. Agreeing with Wojtasek, Sen; John Parsons said, 'There'i t definite need (for the program) and we should first try to get the regents to reconsider" . Although Wojtasek told the senate that the Unive-sity of Nebraska at Omaha had passed legislation Ming for the speakers program to be returned, ASUN President Bud Cuca told the Senate that the UNO Senate has not passed legislation to that effect. Cuca agreed the issue was an important one, but said . that some risks are involved . He told the senate that the issue has been worked on all summer and one of the groups taking part is the Uni versity Program Council. He added that he would like to see the regents address the issue in October. Explaining the risks involved in asking that the pro gram be returned, Sen. Gail Casteel said that UPC could lose their funds. "Ninety -nine chances out of 100 dictates that they (the Regents) won't cut funds," said former chairman of the Government Liaison Committee Bob Gleason. Gleason added that he thought the return of the speakers program y try speaicers ' rebirth should be asked for despite the risk. .'The legal research is all done and the only think hold ing it (speaker program) back is the fear of a half a dozen people around this table and some people on the outside," Gleason said. . "As I understand it, we've got a crummy speakers pro gram and I think we should do something about it," Sen. Doug Novak said. ' Sen.' Brad Belt told the Senate he thinks the time is right for the senate to act because the regents are now TtleaHy vulnerable V , 'The regents will look foolish going to the Legislature asking to take away our student fees "Belt said. . Cuca told the senate that, the regents are withlnlheir legal rights to take away student funds. Speaking to Bob Gleason, Cuca said, "I'm a bit appal led mat you have taken initiative without getting (A) my opinion or (B) UNO's," Cuca said. He later apologized to Gleason. Agreeing that caution should be exercised, Belt said the. Legislature came to the students and that now is the time to move because ASUN has the support of the Legis lature. e must look into it very seriously and something should be done now and not two years from now " Belt said. w - Reacting to the racist letter found in the ASUN office in August, ASUN passed a resolution urging the Internal Affairs .Committee to continue investigating the incident.
