Continued from Page 17 One of the areas of concern for Duncan is the offensive line, he said. The only returning starter, junior guard Brian Neai, has injured his knee and will miss four to six weeks. Taking Neal's place at left guard will probably be rcdshlrt freshman Ron Wagner (6-4, 240). At tackles, junior Tim Stonerook (6-8, 255) and red shirt freshman "Karl Nelson (6-7, 250) will open the season while the other guard spot is held by junior Tim VandeMerkt (64, 234). The top center Is redshlrt fresh man Jim Meyer (6-3, 225). The defensive line returns two of three starters In 78, but the empty spot Is a big one with the graduation of all-conference Mike Stensrud. His spot Is likely to be filled by senior Dick Cuveller (64, 282) who started last year as an offensive guard. The 1978 Big Eight defensive newcomer-of-the-year, sophomore Chris Boskey (6-3,240), returns at the other tackle spot after recording 131 tackles. Junior Kenny Neil (6-6, 252) returns at noseguard after logging 72 tackles and five sacks. BOTH DEFENSIVE ends from '78 are gone, so 78 reserves Junior Bill Herren (6-3. 220) and junior Jim Nissen (6-3, 209) will be starting this fall. Starting linebacker John Less returns after 116 tackles and four sacks a year ago, but is battling junior Lou Viecell (6-1, 190) for the starting spot. The other line backer will be senior Mike Leaders (6-3, 219) who had 56 tackles last year. Smith, Cole captains The Nebraska football squad Tuesday chose1 senior ends Tim Smith and Lawrence Cole as co captains for the 1979 season. Smith, a three -year split end starter who also handles the punting chores, (he has never had a punt blocked) was voted the offensive captain. Cole, a two-year left end starter, was picked the defensive captain. Smith, a 1978 Academic All-Big Eight selection from Chula Vista, Calif., enters his final season, with 804 minutes of playing time, tops on the offensive squad. He is the first end to be named offensive captain in Head Coach Tom Osborne's seven year tenure. Cole, a Dayton, Ohio native, had 61 tackles last year and has 238 minutes of playing time in a Husker Uniform. He is the fourth end to earn defen sive captain under Osborne, following the likes of John Dutton, Bob Martin and George Andrews. Sailboat race sinks swim University of Nebraska swimmers Greg Rice and Bob Mizelle have postponed indefinitely their attempt to swim across Lake McConaUghy, according to Mizelle. The two were unable to attempt the swim as planned during the Labor Day Weekend because of the 10th annual Nebraska Governor's Cup Sailboat Regatta on the lake. All-Big Eight safety senior Mike Schwartz returns, but the rest of the secondary will be new. At the other safety spot, sophomore Joe Brown (61, 170) is the starter. The starting cotnerbacks are junior Larry Crawford (6-1, 172), who had 32 tackles In '78 .and redshlrt freshman Jeff Stallworth (5-1 1, 167), from Omaha! Northwest. Although the Cyclones play Texas on the road In the second game, Duncan Said he Is more worried about the season opener against Bowling Green. "We're very concerned with Bowling Green," Duncan said.
