KZUM opens airwaves to all By Debbie Hemmlnger If you have ever dreamt of being a disc jockey, KZUM could make your fantasy come true. KZUM can offer numerous other fantasies, too. For example, if you've ever wanted to en counter a cultural shock in the midst of Lincoln, KZUM is the place to go. KZUM, 1142 K St., is a carefree, non-commercial, anything-goes FM radio station. The rest of the building in which it is locat ed has been vacated, and outside the front door is a sign that opposes nuclear activity. Walking through the open doorway, one hears unfamiliar sounds radiating from the two rooms that house the radio equipment. Sitting alone behind the control board is Ron Cot tonwood, with his earring reflecting the light of the switchboard. Because he was the only person in the station, our interview was interrupted several times to announce the musicians and their music. Cottonwood, who ex plained that he has never studied broadcasting outside of KZUM's ten-watt station, said that the purpose of the station is to make radio ac cessible to everyone. The station allows anyone to do their own show, provided that for every hour of air time, one hour of volunteer time is spent at KZUM. If the station is owned by anyone, it is owned by the subscribers who pay fif teen dollars (or whatever they have) per year to have a monthly program guide sent to their home. All of the work is done on a volunteer basis. In the organization there is a board 1 11: A i 0. M lf:00 j , .... SiiL. i i r pw m ft XaV- ! Photo by M. Zimmerman was a jour nalism major at Kearney State College and could win a Woody Allen look4ike contest any day of the week. He said the station's idea is special. According to Cotton wood, "People here feel that the air waves belong to the people." The station offers time to anyone, hop ing to promote free speech. They hope to increase their low ten-watt power in order to increase their listening audience. Currently, there are about 200 subscribers to the station's program guide. KZUM has applied to the Federal Communications Commission for increased power but will have to have better equipment to broad cast should the FCC grant their application. In order to raise the money needed to finance the better equipment, the radio station is selling watts for $5 each. The money given becomes a donation from contributors. In the first month, they have sold 1 percent, or 30 watts.
