However, there are some new plans for parking in the upcoming semes ter. , According to John Duve, parking coor dinator and executive secretary to. the parking advisory committee, a new remote permit is available. This is for residence hall students who are willing to limit their park ing to designated remote parking lots at a reduced cost. A remote permit costs $20. Duve said the lower-priced permit should provide some incentive for students who drive less frequently to use the lots located a few blocks farther away. But if a regular lot is full, a student with a standard permit may also have to park in a remote parking facili ty. HARPER SCHRAMM SMITH residence hall students soon will be able to use a new paved and lighted 300-space lot. It will be northwest of the complex, across the rail road tracks. Although construction has not begun, it should be completed in October, Duve said. Work on the northern half of the com muter lot between Harper-Schramm-Smith and W Street also is to begin soon, he said. Duve said to better meet the needs of permit owners, Abel-Sandoz residents will be able to use the lot east of the food ser vice building this year. Last year, it was re served for staff, faculty and visitors who now must use the parking facility north of Abel Hall. MANY STUDENTS said they wonder why the smaller Area 2 lots have not been resurfaced. Duve said some of these lots are only temporary and because they are smaller, they are not as economical to re surface as a larger lot. Seventy to 90 percent of all develop ment money comes from traffic violations. Permit revenue Roes toward maintenance, employee salaries, and other costs, All left over dollars are used for development, Duve said. Weather has a big impact on the parking budget. The bill to clean up from one snowstorm can be as high as $10,000, Duve said. Any funds remaining from snow re moval in a year are transferred for im provement and development. Duve said the parking lots are usually repainted every year. However, because the repainting was estimated to cost $25,000, the project was cut this year. CAPT. KENNETH MARKLE of the UNL police dept. estimated 10,000-12,000 permits would be sold this year. He said he is looking for a light decrease in permit purchases due to the cost of fuel. Permits are being sold at the Bob Devaney Sports Center through Aug. 29. They will go on sale at the UNL police sta tion beginning Aug. 30. r Mi Stop at Kinko's We're Having a Sale For You!!
