have lost him," Simmons wrote of
Roskens.
Simmons asked the senators to deal
with the university budget request early In
the session, so "we will have time to
correct our mistake in again counting on
too much, and can change our program to
live on our income. Instead of making our
faculty again pay for our mistake In plan
nlng too big."
State Sen. Howard Lamb of Anselmo,
who received Simmons' letter, would not
comment on Simmons' charges against
Roskens.
LAMB SAID, however, that the univer
sity, like all political subdivisions, will have
to look closely at its programs, to "trim
wherever possible."
ASUN President Bud Cuca said he feels
that both Simmons and Roskens are right
and that the conflict represents a differ
ence of philosophies.
Roskens Is doing his job by trying to get
more money and Simmons ls doing his Job
by trying to cut down on the amount of
money spent, he said.
However, Cuca said that he feels some
areas of the NU Budget could be cut.
"I honestly feel that there are some
areas of the university that need to looked
into," Cuca said.
SOME OF THE support areas could
possibly take a cut in their budgets, he
said.
The one area Cuca said should not
suffer is faculty salaries because it directly
affects the quality of education.
Roskens said he had not seen the letter,
and had no comment concerning Simmons'
comments.
Concerning the budget recommendat
ion, Roskens said that inflation has caused
hard times for the university. "I have to
present the situation of the university as
candidly as possible," he said.
