Robin Smith's still life exhibition will go on display at the gallery Aug. 28. Work ing in oil and acrylics, Smith has focused his energy on still lifes for the past few years. Sheldon director Norman Geske calls Smith one of Nebraska's best artists. The gallery's major fall show will be an exhibition of works by Preston Dickinson, an artist of the early twentieth century. After leaving Sheldon Oct. 7, the show will be displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Univer sity of New Mexico Art Museum in Albu guergue, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens. The collection of 75 works, an exhibi tion catalog and descriptive text were com piled by the exhibition's guest curator Ruth Cloudman, formerly a staff member at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. This will be the first review and assess ment of Dickinson's work. Dickinson is regarded as one of the most gifted members of an American group of Wednesday, august 22,0 national exhibition painters known as the Precisionists. Influenced by French cubism, these artists used urban and industrial landscapes as their subjects. Dickinson worked in the most advanced styles of his day and ran the gamut from impressionism and expressionism, to cubism and social comment. His career has been called a striking demonstration of what might be seen as definitive of the initial phase in the development of American Modernism. Although he did most of his work in New York, Dickinson came to Nebraska in 1924 for several months. The exhibition will include pastels or grain elevators done while Dickinson was in Nebraska.
