Die credit union, in the Nebraska Union, started August 21, 1978. The credit union now has 107 savings accounts and has granted 74 loans. It is accepted by the State Department of Banking. John Kreuscher, a senior agriculture major, said the ASUN Credit Union is open to anyone affiliated with UNL. However, most of the credit union's customers are students. Kreuscher, chief operations officer at the credit union, said it was opened to provide students with higher interest rates on savings, and, at the same time, provide a lower interest rate on loans. The credit union pays 6 percent Interest on savings, compared with 5.25 percent offered by most banks, and savings and loans. As a result of its student commitment, Kreuscher said, the credit union's Interest rate on loans is 12 percent, compared with 18 to 30 percent charged by credit card companies, banks, and financial institutions. Kreuscher said, that as a rule, the ASUN Credit Union doesn't extend loans exceeding $500 to students, but may, in some cases, loan as much as $1000. He said that most finance companies have a 30 percent interest rate on loans less than $300, with a 28 percent rate on loans be tween $300 and $500. However, Kreuscher said, the ASUN Credit Union does have certain requirements before accepting a loan appli cation. He said an applicant must have an income source to ensure payment on the loan. A scholarship or a basic grant would qualify as a source of income, he said. If a student has no source of income, his parents must co sign the application. So far, the credit union has accepted most loan appli cations and has had no defaults on loans. The ASUN Credit Union, which is insured up to $40,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, has four volunteers working during the school year. Kreuscher said working for the credit union is a good learning experience for business majors. The main problem last year was not the credit union's duties, but making students and staff at UNL aware It exists, he said. We've proven we are needed on campus."
