Larry Doerr Coordinator & Campus Minister Commonplace-UMHE Read the letter Mr. Schneider letter denouncing me for what he thought t said about the Law College is a perfect example of why many educators are concerned with the quality of education today. I suggest Schneider find someone to read to him and to explain to him What I wrote in my opinion. I'm tired of being called i cheap shot for going public with examples of misconduct-at the Law College. No one has refuted my charges. . I stand behind my charges, not because I desire to do so, but because they are true. Schneider, why don't you ask the SBA why they found most of what I said valid? Why don't you ask my old classmates why, in private, many not only agree with me, but have told me of even more serious problems? Why dont you read my letter, Schneider? But, then t suppose there will always be the Schneiders of the world to whom truth takes second place to the need for chapstick. Vince Powers Work with students With Bud Cuca's election to the ASUN presidency, there has been much discussion as to the problems he will face in office. Admittedly he has less experience in student govern ment than Joe Nigro, but I have talked to numerous individuals who believe he can. overcome this handicap, adapt quickly, and serve as an effective president. I trust that he will prove these people correct. Much has been said about the fact that here is a two-thirds SOAR majority hi the Aew senate. People have spoken of the "SOAR philosophy" and expressed doubts as to whether Cuca carl work, with the senate. The last senate leaves behind a somewhat tarnished image marked with petty arguments, disorganization, and a further loss of credibility with students that student government doesn't need (and it was an even greater SOAR majority). Perhaps it's time for someone outside of the system who . can think for himself to step in and lead ASUN toward be coming a more viable organization. But for Cuca to accomplish this, he will need a unified body to work with. I have heard people state that it's "his problem' that he was elected. It shouldn't be a problem and I hope that certain people don't go out of their way Committee looks into complaints Student complaints about tefching assistants have led tfe Commission on Educational Equality, a presidential committee of ASUN, to conduct a study of the teaching assistant program. t The result of the study will be compiled this sum mer and will examine the method of selecting T.A.s, according to , Allison Tcrapra member of the stecring-comrnittee of the Commission. The study will point out areas of the program need tag change. The resulting goals of the Commission will be to revamp the pro gram to include certain criterion for selection and standards for performance. These goals were formul ated fn part from a 24 point guideline let for selecting and training TXH at U.C.LA-, , -Tempt sail. Upon completion, the re port and proposed gosls and , guidelines wI be brought before the faculty senate for approval next fall. to make it become one. Just because one party holds a majority doesn't mean that the only viable choice for president is a member of their own party. I don't feel that there is such a marked difference in the parties' philoso phies that their various members cannot work together. Their main concern should be to work for and with the students and not to perpetuate their real or imagined differences. . In my own campaign 1 stressed the need for greater credibility and student involvement. The students have responded by exhibiting a strong interest in both the general election and the runoff. It's now up to ASUN to keen this Interest alive and work to become a more or ganized and effective body. I wish all of them luck during the year ahead. V Diane Walkowiak ASUN clowns It seems many of our Intrepid reactionaries in ASUN put their cards on the table again during and after the "de bate" of whether or not to boycott Nestle products. "There ate some Issues that don't have two sides," said Sen. Woitasek. Amen to that, especially after watching the workings of the senate during the past three years. Sen. Sue Ellis felt that the research had been done, and the legislators didn't need to hear from a company repre sentative. Even Sen. Yapp's statement implied that since a decision had already been reached before all informa tion on the subject has been presented It would be to ASUN's advantage to bring a Nestle spokesman in to make the decision look nice and Unbiased. Whether Nestle is "guilty" or not 1 or ASUN cannot ascertain right at this moment, but what is obvious is that open debate and fairness of presentation of points of view have no place in UNL student "government." Don't students ever get tired of these clowns in ASUN? Let's stop funding these social bigots.
