Lady gymnasts please crowd 20th win
with their latest performance
By Paul Huscher
Their names weren't Nadia or Olga but
three Nebraska women gymnasts named
Peggy, Patty and Renee combined their
efforts to please more than 1 ,400 Husker
fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center
Saturday.
Peggy Uddick, Patty Carmichael, and
Renee Riesdorff swept the top three all
around sports as NU outscored Big Eight
foe Kansas, 135.05-123.20.
Liddick finished first in the all-around
with a 34.35 score, winning the vault with
a 9.4 score (a new NU record) and the un
even bars with a 8.6 score.
After Saturday's meet, Liddick was al
ready looking to next week's Big Eight
meet in Boulder, Colo.
"I think we'll win if we perform like we
did today," she said. "We were a little
shaky on the beam today but we did good
on the beam last week," she said.
She said Debbie Wilcox from Colorado,
who was on the U.S. Olympic team, is an
excellent all-around performer.
"She'll challenge our top three people,"
Liddick said.
The Husker women are the defending
Big Eight women's gymnastic champions,
but this year sport a new look -freshman
Reisdorff.
"Renee has done an excellent job,"
Liddick said. "We now have three strong
all-arounders."
"She has a lot to learn coming out of
high school (Bryan High School in Omaha),
but she's doing really well," Liddick said.
Reisdorff, who finished third in the all-
around competition with a 34.10 score,
won the balanced beam with a 8.3 score.
Reisdorff said the Kansas meet was a
warm up for next week's Big Eight meet.
"I really think we'll put it together next
week," she said.
Reisdorff is looking even farther than
the Big Eight meet.
She explained that to qualify for the
NCAA championships Nebraska has to win
their regional meet.
"We hope to win our regional, too,"
Reisdorff said. "We're really training hard
and we believe in our minds we can do it,"
she said.
Nebraska's second place all-arounder
was Patty Carmichael, who finished with a
34.20 score while winning the floor exer
cise (9.0) and finishing second in the vault
and uneven bars.
Head coach Judy Schalk said she also
thinks the Huskers will win the Big Eight
meet.
She said the top four teams in the Big
Eight (Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa State, and
Oklahoma State) are "neck to neck."
"Our season averages are very compar
able," Schalk said.
Continued from page 14.
However, Ami Beiriger's layup pulled
NU into a 20-20 tie with 9:32 left in the
first half and Nebraska was never behind
after that.
With Grainne Murray scoring six points,
Nebraska raced to a 42-29 lead and were
on top 42-33 at the half. Nebraska's biggest
lead was 15, 6045 midway through the
second half.
"Our offense slowed down after a
while," Gallagher said. "But we're trying
some people at different positions. I'd
like to have my three big girls (Carol
Garey, Mathaline Otis and Janet Smith) in
side at the same time so we've been moving
Diane (DelVigna) and even Carol to the
wings. We're rebounding a little bit more
the way I'd like."
DelVigna, NU's all-time leading scorer,
led five Lady Huskers in double figures
with 15 points and also grabbed 11 re
bounds. Murray scored 13 points, aided by
a nine for 12 performance at the free
throw line.
Much improved
Freshman Janet Smith and Beiriger
added 12 points and Otis chipped in 10.
"Our freshmen are so much improved.
They don't break down as much and
they're keeping their heads on the court,"
Gallagher said.
Gallagher was encouraged by Beiriger's
play.
"Ami really read the defense well. She
picked up the changes from man to man
and zone," she said. "And she's taking the
shot, too. Our guards weren't taking the
shot earlier."
Nebraska will be trying to avoid its 10th
loss of the season when they travel to Man
hattan, Kan. Tuesday night to meet Kansas
Suite. The game is the first of three in a
row against Big Eight powers, including
Kansas and Missouri.
"Kansas State will really be after us,
especially on their home court," Gallagher
said. "We've split with them this season
(winning in the Big Eight tourney and
losing in Lincoln in December) so it should
be quite a game."
