More than one of his fans promised to leave him "cookies and milk and a carrot for Rudolph." By last week, the Lincoln U.S. Post Office had received 56 letters addressed to Santa. According to Rita Overton, secretary to the Postmaster who is in charge of handling Santa's mail, last year they received nearly 350 letters by Christ mas. This year the Easter Bunny received one and several were sent in the summer. The majority of the letters should be coming in during the approaching weeks, she said. Overton noted that television has a great influence on the types of items requested by children. Top on the list this year are toys including Baby Diaper Rash, Milky the Cow and Star Wars items. Other requests include clothes and large items such as stereos and television sets. Because of the vast amount of mail re ceived, Overton reported that the Post Office finds it impossible to answer the letters. However, she reads every one. She recalled a case several years ago when a neighbor of a family whose father was unemployed wrote that the children would probably not receive any Christmas presents. The letter was read over the air at KFOR radio station and the response was tremendous, she said. The family was supplied with a tree, games, money and other gifts from concerned citizens. One year the Post Office tried to answer all the requests with a form letter, but the manhours required were too costly, Overton said. A senior citizens group once tried to answer the letters but the cost of postage was too expensive. Overton said that she has gotten a kick Will y To V r Y 4U If: We're only hard (LjQ) i to find once. Ti out of reading a number oi the requests.
