National and British
tournaments keep
gym team jumping
Despite a number one national ranking, UNL gym
nastics coach Francis Allen is not pleased with how things
are going at the moment.
"It's so basic. If we don't perform, we don't win,"
Allen said, referring to the Windy City Invitational last
week in Chicago. The Huskers finished third behind In
diana and Iowa State.
Allen and the Huskers, without freshman Jim Har
tung who competed in only two events because of an in
jury, went into the meet thinking they would win. They
had just come off a win at Lawrence, Kansas in the Big
Eight Conference Invitational.
"I was pleased with the performance at Kansas," Allen
said. "We didn't do that well, but we scored a 436 which
was more than last year's national champion. We thought
the Windy City would be dynamite but the sidehorse
specialists fell off and there were a lot of other falls.
We just didn't perform so we got third."
While in Chicago some of the Huskers competed in
the Midwest Open, an individual meet where no team
scores are kept.
Senior Larry Gerard tied for first in the still rings and
placed second in the all-around. Hartung was third in the
floor exercise and second in vaulting, and Steve
Todd was seventh in the pommel horse and Steve Parks
was sixth in the high bar.
Gerard said he was not pleased with his second-place
finish.
"I didn't do as well as I wanted to do," he said. "I was
told not to work the finals if I didn't want to because
they drain you all out and with London coming up I
didn't want that to occur.
"I didn't do well in the preliminaries. I missed four
events and two were major breaks. It made me mad
because I didn't go to make major breaks. I was not
pleased (with his performance in the prelims) so I went
into the finals and I was very pleased."
Gerard and Allen leave Friday for the Coca-Cola Bri
tish Invitational meet in London. Allen is the coach of the
American team of three gymnasts.
Gerard said he wants to win this meet.
"I think I have a chance," he said. "If I go in with a
straight and level head and have a positive attitude. I
haven't had a 100 percent miss free meet yet and this is
my opportunity to do it."
While Allen and Gerard are in London, three other
members of the team will be competing in the Ball State
Invitational for all-arounders. Hartung, junior Mark
Williams and sophmore Chuck Chmelka will compete Fri
day and Saturday.
Allen said the Huskers can win that meet as well.
"It all depends on how Chmelka does if we win it. It
depends on his attitude," he said.
