edge of the smaller right hand drum in order to tune it,
Rakha began a solo based on the jhaptal cycle of per
cussion, a ten beat cycle.
With grey hair flying as he moved from side to side,
Rakha demonstrated why Shankar considers him the
best tabla player in India.
The concert concluded with a thumri, a semi-classical
style which Shankar said allows the musician to play diff
erent ragas or folk melodies occasionally returning to the
main theme of the thumri.
Wrapped in music
Sitting in the middle of the raised platform on the
stage, Shankar sat cross legged on the stage, as he led
Rakha and the audience through the melodies of the
thumri.
An intense musician, Shankar's head moved and dipped
as he wrapped himself in his music.
Directing the flow of the music with his left hand,
Shankar seemed to enjoy the performance along with
Rakha, both of them smiling at the audience and each
other as they changed tempo and melody simultaneously,
improvising all the while.
With his right thumb touching the bottom gourd of the
sitar, Shankar's fingers flew to the conclusion of the
thumri and the concert.
Shankar and Rakha received a well deserved standing
ovation from a crowd which realized it had heard some of
the best musicians in the world, performing with obvious
enjoyment.

THE ANIMATED FILMS OF MARY BEAMS
"With fine white lines on dark backgrounds, Beams '
films are models of aesthetic ecology: the maximum
of expression through what appears to be a minimum
of means. In fact, these brief haikus of line woven
into action are examples of rotoscoping and optical
play elevated to a fine art. "
Screenings today at 3:30 & 7:30 p.m.
Ms. Beams will be at the evening screening
to discuss her work with the audiences.
