University closings are jointly decided
The decision to close school due to snow is a joint one
made by the chancellor's office with information gathered
by the weather service, grounds department, student or
ganizations and the city, according to Richard L. Fleming,
assistant to UNL Chancellor Roy Young and director of
information.
"If the snow starts in the morning and gets progres
sively worse past noon, we may close in the afternoon. We
get in touch with the statehouse and try to juggle closing
times to avoid excessive traffic at one time," Fleming
said.
Closings are based on the level of difficulty of getting
around the city, he added.
"We will go with forecasts in the evening, get up early
in the morning and check the new forecasts, condition of
the streets, and check with the grounds department to

see about lots. We aim to have a decision about closing
by 6 a.m., and urge staff and students to tunc in the
radio," Fleming said.
According to Fleming, if the commuter lots arc clean,
school is likely to stay open, since a large portion of stu
dents live just a few blocks off campus and can make it
to classes.
Because the snow subsided Sunday after Thanksgiving
break the decision to have classes was made by 6 p.m.
Sunday, even though many students were stranded
because of icy road conditions.
"Judgment was that if a student was out 100 to 200
miles and didn't feel they should drive, it was an individu
al decision they had to make, considering the conditions
where they were," Fleming said.
As soon as a decision to close school is made, the news
media will be notified and cancellation announcements
will be made.
Operation Snowlift
looks for drivers
If you view driving in Nebraska's winter snow as a
challenge or adventure, then Operation Snowlift may be
for you.
Operation Snowlift is an employee shuttle system de
signed to get UNL employees to work when the weather
makes driving difficult.
The program is being organized by the University
Police Department and Lancaster County Civil Defense.
Students with good driving records, valid drivers licenses
and auto insurance are welcome to participate.
Students won't be paid for their services, although
they will be reimbursed for gasoline. Anyone interested
should call the University Police Department at 472-3555.
Studetns will be asked to take the UNL employees to
work and take them home again.
