Congressman, reporters killed on fact-finding quest
Washington-The State Department said late Saturday
it has been told Rep. Leo J. Ryan, D-Calif., and a number
of reporters have been shot and killed after an attack on
the congressman's fact-finding mission at the airport in
Port Kaituma, Guyana.
Ryan was leading a 13 -person delegation investigating a
controversial American religious settlement at Jonestown
in the South American country.

State Department spokesman Tom Reston said the
report reached Washington by a flash message from the
U.S. embassy in Guyana, formerly a British colony.
Reston said the shooting and Ryan's death have not been
confirmed.
Reston said the report was relayed by a pilot who was
flying Ryan, a group of reporters and a Ryan staff worker
to the People's Temple, a settlement of about 1,200
Americans established in Guyana a year ago by Jim Jones,
a former San Francisco city official.
The pilot escaped by flying away from the attackers in
one of two planes on the landing strip near the settle
ment. Before leaving San Francisco five days ago, Ryan said:
"I am going to investigate the conditions of Americans (in
the settlement) who, I have been told, are working from
dawn to nightfall with terribly mental and physical
punishment if they don't work hard enough."
Reports from the U.S. mission showed the two planes
had flown to Jonestown and were preparing to leave when
the shooting broke out.
Soviets issue warning
Tehran, Iran-Soviet President Leonid I. Brezhnev
warned the West against military intervention in Iran, say
ing such an act would involve Russia's security, the Soviet
news agency Tass reported Saturday from Moscow.
It said that in an interview with the Communist Party
newspaper Pravda, Brezhnev was asked to "assess foreign
press reports on interference by Western powers, especial
ly the U.S., in the events in Iran and even the possibility
of military intervention by them."
Tass quoted Brezhnev as saying "events taking place"
in Iran are an internal affair and "It must also be clear
that any interference, especially military interference, in
the affairs of Iran-a state which directly borders on the
Soviet Union-would be regarded by the U.S.S.R. as a
matter affecting its security interests."
Indian leader held
American Indian activist Dennis Banks was held for
three hours by authorities at . San Francisco Airport but
released after the San Mateo County prosecutor said Cali
fornia could not hold him on a South Dakota warrant.
Sheriffs Sgt. Steven Burton said Banks, 45, was arrest
ed Friday night on a 1975 warrant for failing to appear in
a South Dakota court ;f or sentencing.
The Indian leader fled to California in 1975 after his
conviction for riot and assault in Custer, S.D., in 1973.
The California Supreme Court last March upheld Gov.
Edmund Brown Jr.'s refusal to extradite Banks, now a
teacher at an Indian college. Brown said Bank's life would
be in danger if imprisoned in South Dakota.
Business majors will represent UNL
at Texas A M student conference

Two business majors will represent UNL at the 24th
Student Conference on National Affairs at Texas A & M
University next February.
Scott Brittenham, an international marketing and
economics major and Sue Ellis, a finance and economics
major have been selected by Chancellor Roy Young to
participate in SCONA, a four-day program which con
centrates on national and international issues.
According to Brittenham, a junior from Omaha, this is
the first year UNL has been invited to participate in the
conference, which hosts students from more than 75
American, Canadian, and Mexican universities.
A letter sent to UNL concerning SCONA, announced
that this year's conference topic is "America's Economic
Environment: Business, Bucks and Bureaucracy."
A focal point of the conference is the formation of dis
cussion groups in which ideas are exchanged among the
representatives. Presentations by scholars and nationally
known spokesmen also become the subjects of discussion.
Former President Lyndon Johnson, Senator Hubert
Humphry, vice president Walter Mondale and Dr. Milton
Friedman have been SCONA speakers in the past years.
Through attending the conference, Brittenham, an
ASUN senator, said he wants to get to know other student
leaders and learn about programs in other universities.
Ellis, a sophomore ASUN senator, said she is "really
excited about the conference topic." She added she hopes
other universities which have projects similar to a credit
union and student foundation, two projects in the infant
stages at UNL, will offer suggestions on how to build and
expand the programs.

Vacation schedules announced
Students may have to find other places
to eat and sleep by 8 ajn. Wednesday.
Most residence halls will close then for
Thanksgiving vacation, said a spokesman
from the housing office. They will re-open
at 1 pjn. Sunday.
However, Piper Hall (in Neihardt) and
the graduate section of Selleck Quadrangle
will be open for students already living
there. However, there will be no food
service.
The last meal in the residence halls will
be lunch on Tuesday, and the first meal
served after vacation will be breakfast on
Monday.
The Nebraska Union will close at 9 p.m.
Tuesday, at 5 pjn. on Wednesday and will
be closed Thursday through Sunday.
The East Union will be open 7:30 a.m.
until 5 pjn. Tuesday and Wednesday, but
will be closed Thursday through Sunday.
Regular clinic services will be offered
through Wednesday, according to Loah
Bennett, University Health Center staff
assistant.
Only emergency sendees will be offered
Thursday through Sunday, she said.
Love Library will be open Wednesday
from 7:30 a.m. until 5 pjn. and will be
closed Thursday. Love will be open as
usual Friday through Sunday.
