UNL chosen as a model for general education project
UNL has been chosen as one of twelve schools to parti
cipate in the project on General Education Models in
Washington D.C. at Marymount College, according to Max
Larsen, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.
"The criteria for the selection of schools included the
potential for seriously re-examining undergraduate educa
tion and devising new and improved programs, where
needed," he said. The support of the administration and
faculty and the commitment of resources, if necessary to
make changes, also were factors.
Larsen, along with History Professor John Yost, stu
dent representative Eric Sandberg, Music Professor Larry
Lusk, English Professor Gerry Brookes and Speech Com
munications Professor BUI Seiler will participate in the
program Thursday through Sunday.
The GEM project is sponsored by the Society for
Values in Higher Education and is funded by the Exxon
Foundation, Larsen said. GEM has been established to cre
ate a nationwide consortium of colleges and universities
that can serve as models for the improvement of general
education, according to Larsen.
Red carpet rolled out for scholars
This year's Red Carpet Days for high school students,
coordinated by the Student Alumni Board, will be Friday
and Saturday.
"The main purpose is to show the positive aspects of
the university and why it is a great place to come to,"
said Rob Severin, Red Carpet Days chairman.
This year there is a new emphasis, as merit scholars, in
addition to regent scholars, are being invited to visit the
campus, Severin said.
Merit scholarships are nationally awarded, while regent
scholarships are awarded to Nebraska high school students
by the NU Board of Regents.
Red Carpet activities begin Friday morning at the
Alumni House with opening remarks by Lori Rosenlof,
board coordinator and Richard Armstrong, vice chancellor
for student affairs, Severin said.
Lunch will be served at the East Union, where UNL
Chancellor Roy Young will speak. Students are scheduled
to attend mini sessions Friday afternoon which deal with
financial aids, admissions and advising, student organiza
tions, fraternities and sororities and residence halls, he
said.
Friday's final event will be a pizza party at the Alumni
House.
Students will be staying the residence halls with last
year's merit winners, he said. There will be a breakfast at
Alumni House Saturday morning and tours of city
campus.

finalists will be attending the two day event, Severin said.
He said 1 16 students were invited, but many couldn't
attend because of a conflict with a music program this
weekend.
"A pretty high percentage of those who came to
the program last year decided to attend the university.
There hasn't been a study but I'm sure it's pretty big,"
Severin said.
The specific goals of Project GEM are:
-to develop coherent models of general education that
are effective for different kinds of institutions and
students.
-to assist participating colleges and universities to
design and establish improved education programs that
will provide students with better education and
experiences.
-to provide faculty members opportunities for profes
sional development which derive from teaching or
context.
-to have a better understanding of the barriers to the
improvement of general education and design strategies to
overcome them.
The project encourages student participation, Larsen
said. The Task Force on Undergraduate Education
includes representatives from the Student Advisory Board
and all students.
"It doesn't make sense to evaluate a curriculum unless
you have a good student input.
"The task force will soon devise a method for soliciting
student opinions about the quality of their undergraduate
education and their ideas for improvement," he said.
