The daughter of 1936 GOP presidental nominee an J former Kansas Gov. Alf Landon coasted to victcy Tuesday in her first try for major office, defeating former congressman Bill Roy, a Democrat. Mrs. Kassebaum became the first woman to represent Kansas in the Senate and only the second woman to be elected a senator. Former Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine, also a Republican, was the first. Gambling voted down Although Missourians said yes, voters in three other states said no to measures that would have legalized gambling. Despite proponents' predictions that legalized casino gambling would toss a needed economic lifeline to the Miami Beach ocean-front resort area, 72 percent of voting Floridians swamped the plan in "no" votes. In New Jersey, the first Atlantic City gambling casino opened just six months ago and voters said Tuesday that was enough: they rejected a proposal to allow sports betting on jai alai by a 60 percent vote. In Virginia, 53 percent turned down a proposal to allow pari-mutuel betting at horse tracks. But in Missouri, voters approved a small wording change that will permit them to participate in games like the Readers' Digest Sweepstakes. Amin makes offer Nairoi, Kenya-President Idi Amin offered Wednesday to withdraw his troops from the 710 square miles of Tanzanian Territory he annexed nine days ago. But first, Amin said in a broadcast speech, Tanzania must promise never to invade his country again and stop assisting Ugandan exiles living in Tanzania from carrying out "sub versive activities" against Uganda. NIT Rnard nf Recents is srhfrliilfr! tn discuss a variety of controversial requests at its meeting Friday. Among these issues is a request by ASUN president Ken Marienau to deposit $40,000 from the Student Activities Fi nancial Services account to the ASUN Credit Union. The credit union, which began opera tions in August, was designed to provide a high savings yield, low loan rates and a credit rating for the students. Marienau's recommendation states that all student organizations are required to deposit all their funds through the Student Activities Financial Services office. The current balance of these funds does not usually fall below $220,000 and the pro posed deposit to the credit union would be about 18 percent of the normal minimum balance. Another request to be considered is a $47,000 budget increase for the Sports Complex toilet, concession and locker addition. Sponsors of the request, Miles Tom mmeraasen, Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, and Bob Devaney, Athletic Director, recommend that the increase be granted because of a change in the foundation for the structure. Also, confusion in the contract of the Curtis Animal Holding Facility is resulting in a $17,800 budget increase request. The original specifications submitted by Curtis described the space as either "inside" or "outside." The Physical Plant interpreted the term "outside" space to be areas actually out side of the building. In veterinary technology jargon, "out side" space is really inside the building, but refers to outside the animal holding rooms. Tommeraasen and Martin Massengale, Vice Chancellor for the Institute of Agri culture and Natural Resources, sponsored the recommendation which stresses that the university should comply with federal and state animal handling laws. This would call for a higher than average cost per square foot for construction. The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday at Regents Hall. daily nebraskan Publication No. 144080 Editor in chief: Carla Engstrom. Managing editor: Betsie Ammons. News editor: Tamara Lee.
