Virginia Smith's victory
assured in third district
With 29 percent of the votes in, fore
casters already were predicting an easy
victory for Republican incumbent
candidate Virginia Smith in the 3rd
district.
"I have worked hard for years,"
Smith said. "There have been many
successes but many issues yet remain
unsolved. I think the people were for
me because I reflect the philosophy of
the third district."
Democrat candidate Marilyn Fowler
attributes Smith's win to her four-year
incumbency and well-funded camp
aign. "Smith spent hundreds of thousands
of dollars campaigning in the third
district which was more than the senate
or governor candidates spent," she said.
The incumbent said she will serve her
third term with hopes of solving prob
lems dealing with inflation, and agri
culture. She said she was going to Wash
ington early next year to work on a
trade mission to Saudi Arabia to
promote the sale of agricultural and
manufacturing products.
Several months ago I decided I'd be a
candidate until I won," Fowler saiid.
"I'm still a candidate."
The Lexington farm resident said
that she will keep challenging Smith so
that more people will realize how many
things happen in Washington that she
didn't tell us. If we uncover more, it will
be good for our future."
Although she said she must now
catch up, Fowler will keep watching her
opponent.
"There are areas not discussed till I
brought them to the attention of the
people," she said. "It won't be as easy
for her (Smith) to not tell of these
issues."
Fowler believes that the above aver
age turnout at the polls correlates with
the attitudes she encountered in her
travels across the district.
"The people are more open and are
thinking and being concerned," she said.
"The issues on the ballot have been an
awakening. I hope this is an example of
the citizen involvement needed to have
good government."

Cavanaugh defeats Daub;
35-year custom broken
Breaking a 35-year tradition, a
Democrat was elected for more than
one term to the 2nd District Congress
ional seat. John Cavanaugh defeated
opponent Hal Daub by 45,188 to
40,686.
A press agent for the incumbent said,
'"We are elated," when it was announced
Cavanaugh had won.
Tim McMahan reported that
Cavanaugh would work to reduce the
size and scope of the federal govern
ment to increase efficiency. Earlier
Cavanaugh stated 'ie would combat
inflation with a three-point program
which includes a comprehensive
national energy policy, reductions in
government spending and incentives to
business and to expand production.
Although Daub was unavailable for
comment, he had previously announced
another plan, similar in some aspects to
Cavanaugh's, to combat inflation.
