In response to Jeff Unger's October 20th article,
"Graduation dreams delayed by work, money woes", I
would like to say that I agree with all those students who
felt that taking longer than four years to graduate wasn't
such a bad way to go through college.
What's so important about getting out in four years,
anyway? There are lots of students who do almost
nothing but crack" the books for four years, and most
of them end up never taking time out for anything
else. Things like getting to know people and having fun
with friends take a back seat to getting those grades and
studying for that exam. Perhaps it's a reflection of the
competitive world in which we live. You have to spend all
your time training for your career if you want to get any
where in the world, and you especially have to work
hard if you want to get to that prestige level quickly.
That's what they say, anyway.
People who work while they are going to school even
have less time for non-school activities if they try to get
out in four years. Some of these people have so little
free time for people related activities that they almost go
insane. When I was in high school, I told myself that I was
going to finish college in four years and not owe anyone
at the end of it. Well, I'm getting out in four years, but
I've had to work 20 hours per week all the way through,
and also take more classes each semester than I would
have liked. But I'm not asking for sympathy. 1 made the
decision. It's just that now, in my next to last semester,
I'm starting to realize the things that I missed in the
process.
Take it from one who's been there and who knows,
there's nothing magical about getting through college in
four years. Take your time and take as long as you think
is right. If you don't have to work, four years might not
be so bad. All I can say is, don't get so bogged dbwn with
school work that you don't have time to spend with
people. Get out and do things and enjoy yourself. You'll
have time for classes if your course load isn't so heavy.
And you will enjoy your college years a lot more, which is
a part of what's it's all about.

UNL waste
(An open letter to Vice Chancellor Tommeraasen)
Can you and will you made recommendations for posi
tive changes which would make the UNL business opera
tions more manageable and more efficient?
In the wake of Regent R. Simmons' proposals that
UNL's and the systems-level business operation be
merged, what are your feelings on these recommenda
tions? (In the interest of economy and efficiency at
UNL.)
There have been numerous reports of inefficiencies in
UNL's business operation-e.g., retaining out-of-state con
sultants for jobs which require on-the-spot, day-to-day-decisions.
(See Daily Nebraskan story on appointment of
UNL landscape architect). It would be interesting to know
how much they were paid for their long distance expertise
in campus planning, landscape work, etc.!
Another example in 1977: Coffey, in close harmony
with city of Lincoln bureaucrats, manipulated the East
Campus Neighborhood association to ask for special legis
lative funds to build a new 4-land entrance, to the East
Campus (because the residents group had tried for years
to get a traffic signal installed on Holdrege Street, at 38th
and 40th Street, and nobody responded.)
Another interesting case: Files could not be found in
RJE. Burnetts's office (Purchasing) when out of town
business men inquired about 1977 bidding and purchase
prices sold to a Lincoln group at a questionable figure (av
erage of $1,700.00 per acre for valuable industrial
development land along Havelock Avenue, from 73rd
to 84th Streets.)

One university official (who will not be quoted)
reports that Regent Schwartzkopf was "very close" to the
negotiations and financing of this property-and that
friends or associates of the regent made the purchase in
August 1977. Was it Mr. Breslow and associates. (The
above can be checked by looking at Lancaster County
land and title records.)
Finally, what is your reaction to recommendations that
"UNL" books be audited-(An audit of all governmental
and other income, and all outgoing funds during the last
fiscal or calendar year)?
If you are opposed to acting on or discussing any of
these recommendations, please enlighten your
successor-and the Nebraska taxpayers-on how UNL can
do a more efficient job.
