thursday, October 26, 1978 ad lib page 3 Stewart. . . Continued from page 2 Coinciding with his induction to his first rock band, and ironically with his leaving school, came Stewarts growing interest in literature and history. It became an exacting hobby. "Roads to Moscow" the eight minute definative Al Stewart song, admittedly was his most in volved undertaking. It culminated four years of study, and the reading of some 50 history books. It was also some thing he felt was worth knowing about. "It creeps into everything. It's insidious really, because you never really know it's there." noted Stewart. "For example, the first two lines in "Man For All Seasons" (from Time Passages) are Nvhat if you reached the age of reason, only to find there was no reprieve." "Well I know, I don't know how many other people do, that the 'Age of Reason: and The Reprieve', were the first two volumes of Jean-Paul Sartre's Roads to Freedom," he explained. "So I have actually condensed 600 pages of Jean-Paul Satre into two lines. These little things happen to crop up all through the songs." While the astute Stewart enjoys touring, he is not parti cularly fond of studios. Still, his records are of the best examples in recording excellence. This is due much in part to Stewarts allience with master producer Alan Parsons. Despite the static atmosphere of the studio, it has frequently served as inspiration for Stewart. Often coming in to a recording session with nothing more than a skeletal song, he will develop it from there, sometimes writing three sets of lyrics per song. As an example, "Year of The Cat" was almost a song about a British comedian before a last minute rewirte. Year of the sax It was also in the studio that Parsons suggested using a saxophone (an instrument destined to be a focal point on Stewarts upcoming two singles) in the track for "Year of The Cat." As to whether he went into the production of Time Passages any differently, coming off a platinum album, Stewart responded. "You only know that sort of thing in retrospect," he said, as "Time Passages" ominously comes on over the radio. "But as I talk to you, I hear in the background the saxaphone wailing away. I was well aware of the fact that the sax contributed towards "Year of The Cat" being a hit, so obviously I wasn't going to go out and make a record without a saxaphone on it." After his "Cat" success, Stewart says he can now afford to pay his bills. While the success of Time Passages (number 24 nationally and moving fast) seems assured, he warns that he is a very cautious person, who doesn't be lieve in a success until about six months after its happen ed. So what f .ii store for this man who has created a pain less way of administering history lessons to the masses? "At the moment I'm trying not to read books, I've read too many hooks," laughs Stewart. "Now I'm watch ing old, late night movies. I regard it as an investment, really." daytiine MORNING 6:30 6:00 0 WHAT'S NEW f) NOT FOR WOMEN ONLY fit PTL PROGRAM Q VARIOUS PROGRAMMING fj FARM REPORT (FRI.) Answer Is Love (WED.)
