Although removed from
Irish . . .
Continued from Page 1
His first book, he said, was about the everyday build
ings of Ireland which he calls the "architecture of the
people."
Americans are much more appreciative of the type of
architecture his books deals with, he said. He defines
everyday buildings as homes, courthouses and stores.
He said Americans will fight for a 1920s building,
while ihe Irish consider tearing down the ruins of a tenth
century Viking city.
Destruction of the Viking city was a big issue when he
left Ireland five weeks ago, he said. Before he left 15,000
people had marched down the streets of Dublin to protest
a new office building, to be constructed next to the ruins,
he said.
Full of history
Rothery.said Ireland is full of history which is pre
served in the buildings of the country. Many times it is
unconscious, he admitted, but there is a feeling of security
to a structure that has observed hundreds of years of
change.
Buildings begin to take on personalities, he said. The
personalities of the buildings and the atmosphere add to
the character of cities, he claimed.

and tales of tradition take him
For example, he said, Amsterdam has a casual atmo
sphere and is a city that seems to welcome anyone or
any idea.
He described Dublin as "seedy and rundown" but still
showing definite character.
Rothery said Dublin has been described as containing
the "relics of old decency" but is being ruined by insen
sitivity. Tourist attractions
The history of Ireland is one of its attractions on the
tourist market, he said. The country has been swarmed
with tourists as people begin to forget about the violence
in northern Ireland, he said.
Since the memories of the violence have faded, he said
tourism has increased.
Rothery said tourists are helping his cause in
preservation of the historical buildings of the country.
"Tourists do not want to come to see office blocks,"
he said.
Tourists also bring money into the country, and
Rothery said that people listen to money before they will
listen to reason.
