Variety show from Taiwan
makes music on college tour
It isn't necessary to be a music major to
perform in a variety show in a foreign
country. At least it isn't necessary in the
Republic of China (Taiwan).
Students of the Youth Good-Will Mis
sion of the Republic of China are touring
America and, according to director Eugene
Chien, only a few music majors are in the
group. The performers major in everything
from engineering to business.
Chien, speaking at a reception in the Ne
braska Union Wednesday, said he does not
even have a music degree but rather a doc
torate in engineering.
He said he was chosen because he had
lived in America while attending college
and the group needed someone "to check
on reservations and hotels."
The students, eight girls and six boys,
were recommended by their respective
schools because of their excellence in per
formance of one or more of the types of
acts offered in the show.
For example. Chien said, one of the stu
dents, a mathematics major, had been play
ing ancient Chinese music for ten years as
a hobby.
The students are touring America "as a
sign of friendship, to promote goodwill and
understanding," he said.
One of tlfe students said he had gotten
the impression that "in America, you can
do anything."
Sometimes this is bad, he said, such as
in New York where the students heard that
everyone carried a gun for protection.
"There are bad things and there are
good things which are not in my country,"
he said.
Chien said he enjoyed New York, where
he attended college, and he did not feel
afraid in the city, which he said has more
to offer than fear.
"I was only mugged once," he said.
"That is pretty good for four years."
Chien said the students have had no
major problems since arriving in the United
States.
The only problem that they faced was a
lack of sleeping time, he said. The students
usually only get four or five hours of sleep
because of a demanding schedule.
UNL was the 29th stop for the students,
Chien said. From Lincoln they will travel
to St. Joseph and Maryville, Mo., and Em
poria, Kan. before returning to Taiwan.
At the end of the trip, the students will
have been in America for 60 days, he said.
Blows exchanged in campus lot
Words led to blows Wednesday in an in
cident occurring in an Area 7 parking lot
south of Memorial Stadium.
University Police said that the argument
began when a pedestrian apparently felt
that a driver of a car came too close to
him, and the two "exchanged verbal
assaults."
Physical blows followed, and the driver
of the car was treated at the Student
Health Center for "minor lacerations" and
cuts around the eye, police said.
A passenger in the car, also involved,
was injured slightly, but not treated, police
said.
Everyone involved was being questioned
Wednesday afternoon at University Police
headquarters, but police said any charges
would be filed by the Lancaster County
Attorney's office.
