Topped with a black
cowboy hat, Bovee looked
like a folk singer should. His
faded blue jeans and worn
boots obviously have
accompanied him on his
many travels.
Tour beginning
Bovee said he is begin
ning a tour that will lead
him to Laramie, Wyo.
before he continues to Den
ver, Utah, Oregon and Wash
ington. If all goes well, he
said, he hopes to be home
by Thanksgiving.
"Folk singing is all I've
done for a living for seven
years, and it's pretty meager
living sometimes," Bovee
said. One of the luxuries he
couldn't always afford was
transportation, he added.
When he was getting
started, he said, lack of
transportation forced him
to hitch rides on trains. A
student of hobo music,
Bovee displays his affinity
with the hobo lifestyle in a
tune that begins:
"I've traveled East, I've
traveled West, I've been in
every state, a member of the
knights of rest with dues
paid up to date. There 's just
two things that I despise;
two things I always shirk.
First thing is a cake of soap,
the other one is work. "
"I'm glad there are a few
bum lovers out 'there,"
Bovee said after the crowd
showed its appreciation of
the tune.
According to Bovee,
musical appreciation and
sophistication among
Lincoln audiences is com
parable to audiences in
Seattle, San Francisco, Chic
ago and Boston-which he
called the folk music centers
of the world.
Lincoln well known
Bovee said Lincoln is be
ginning to be nationally
recognized as a good place
to perform.

meet," Bovee explained.
Bovee, who now lives in
Minneapolis, is a Bellevue
native and a UNL history
graduate.
"I come back here and
play pretty often because I
have friends here."
Opportunities to perform
in Lincoln for folk musi
cians have multiplied since
Bovee was first active in the
Lincoln music scene around
1964.
Bovee said he left
Lincoln in 1969 but comes
back often for performances
at UNL, Wesleyan Univer
sity and local bars.
Although proficient
performers are attracted to
Lincoln's musically aware
audiences, Bovee said, "It's
a hard town to make a living
in.
'The music here is fine,
unfortunately there aren't a
lot of places to play here,"
Bovee added.
But he said Lincoln is
nationally recognized as a
home base for many articu
late artists.
"Oh, yeah, incredibly,"
Bovee said enthusiastically,
when asked if the folk and
country music following
had expanded in Lincoln.
Bovee credits Lincoln
banjo player Steve Hanson
with the increased local
interest in folk, bluegrass
and acoustic country music.
"He is the best all
around musician I know,"
Bovee said.
Ten years ago, when
Bovee lived in Lincoln, he
said he knew all of the local
country and folk per
formers. There only were 10
to 20 at the time.

"We would all gather at
my place every Friday night
and play until midnight,"
Bovee said.
"At that time there
wasn't anyone (folk singers)

"I think what happened

branched into folk and

of the expanded interest in
Lincoln.
But Bovee describes his
music as "folk music; old

country became commercial."
