It's the Republicans. A caravan of cars and vans adorned with bumper stick ers and posters toured the Second Congressional District this week. The caravan included Republican candidates Charles Thone, Roland Luedtke, Don Shasteen, Doug Bereuter, Paul Douglas, and a variety of candidates running for county offices. It also included supporters and campaign volunteers. The caravan is aimed at the voters in many of the smaller Nebraska communities which might have been missed in other activities, said Eric Chapman, field coord inator for the Bereuter campaign. The caravan is sponsored by the Republican party, Chapman added. Typical of the stops during the caravan was a street campaign at Milford on Thursday. A crowd of about 30 persons huddled together just off the main street downtown attempting to stay warm against the biting October wind. They waited. One supporter remarked, "They're (the politicians) always late, but they're the first to the polls." Finally, the sound of music was heard and the caravan rounded the corner led by the local police chief. A loud speaker announced which candidates were riding in the caravan. As many supporters and candidates got out of the seven cars and three vans in the caravan as were standing on the street waiting. Campaign stickers, campaign literature, pencils and emery boards were passed out and the candidates began making short speeches. A few minutes later, the leader of the caravan began blowing the whistle that hung around his neck and shouted for the members of the caravan to "load 'em up." From Milford, the caravan would travel to Dorchester for another street campaign, to Friend for a coffee meeting, to Fairmont for another street campaign and finally to York for a free barbecue. short stuff r 8 2 fed s The College of Arts and Sciences is accepting local applications for the Truman Scholarships with a deadline of October 13, 1978.
