Beta escorts protect UNL women Protest is planned
If a woman dreads walking alone across a dark campus,
who can she call on for help? On the UNL city campus,
she can contact Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and one of its
members will escort her.
Beta Theta Pi, 1515 R Street, began its escort service
in the last few weeks of the 1977-78 school year. The
service was re-established in the second week of this
semester.
"I got the idea by talking to girls I knew on campus.
We knew there was a problem and thought we'd try to do
something about it," said Tom Pflug, who suggested
the service.
A woman may call the fraternity a half hour to 45
minutes before she wants to be met. She should leave
her name, the time she wants to meet, and where she
is going.
"We also ask her to let us know when she is coming
back so one of us can be there to accompany her home,"
said Pflug.
Escorts are fraternity members who wish to participate
and who have the time, according to Pflug.
The excort service is operated between 6:30 and 10:30
in the evening. Said Pflug, "I don't think we've ever
had anyone call after 10:30."
Only women living on campus are accompanied,
because members escort on foot.
"We can't go meet girls off campus because we don't
have the resources," emphasized Pflug. If a woman lives
off campus, a fraternity member will escort her to her
car.
"Last year the response was mild because there wasn't
a lot of time left in the semester, Pflug said. "This year
we've had fair to moderate use of the service. We escort
one or two girls a night."
If a woman routinely attends a meeting or class, an
arrangement can be made for regular accompaniment.

Gen. William Westmoreland's appearance Fridav will hp
met by a planned demonstration from the Lincoln Chap
ter of the Iranian Student Association.
The demonstration, scheduled for 1 1 a.m. Friday in
front of the Nebraska Union, will protest the Shah of
Iran, the United States news media and Westmoreland's
public lecture, "Vietnam in Perspective."
According to several members of the Iranian associ
ation, the demonstration is intended to coincide with
Westmoreland's visit.
"We expect about 200 people participating in the
demonstration from Lincoln, Omaha, and other towns in
Nebraska," said an Iranian demonstration organizer.
The protest, which is basically anti-shah, according to
an Iranian student, also will emphasize the media's neglect
in reporting recent Iran uprisings, he said.
