Carly Simon performed before an audience of 6,000
in a meadow called Allen's Farm in Chilmark on Martha's
Vineyard on September 23 and 24, in a benefit protest
against the proposed Pilgrim One reactor to be built in
Plymouth. Backing her up was the same band she takes
on the road: David Sanborn, sax; Warner Brunhart,
keyboards, Bill Mernit, keyboards; Tony Levin, bass;
Steve Gadd, drums; David Spinozza, lead guitar; Joe
Carroll, guitar; and Mike Manieri, vibes. Husband James
Taylor couldn't make the show, but his siblings Kate and
Alex represented the clan.
Lee Oskar attended a sing-along jam session recently at
Sound City Studios, joining the likes of Phil Everly, Ruth
Buzzi, Dan Fogelberg and singing cowboy Larry Mahan in
vocal overdubs for Tanya Tucker's new album. Lee also
resumed his coaching duties with the Centerfold Girls
soccer team this past weekend in San Francisco as they
faced off against a team from station KSFX. Proceeds go
to Mt. Zion Children's Hospital.
Dee Dee Bridgewater is off for a well-earned European
vacation with husband Gilbert Moses, who directed her as
"brandy" in the just-wrapped Fish That Saved Pittsburth.
(It's the first time they've worked together since The Wiz,
for which Dee Dee won a Tony Award.) The role of
Brandy was rewritten and expanded since Dee Dee did so
well in it: Brandy's a cheerleader (more like a taunt
leader, from what we hear) for the initially failing Piscean
basketball team. Jonathan Winters, Flip Wilson, Stockard
Channing, and the Sylvers and Spinners will also appear in
the film, which is scheduled for March or April release.
The Cars' European picture-single ("My Best Friend's
Girl") is coming out this month, pressed in England after
a long wait for special heavy-duty vinyl to arrive from
Germany. The vinyl will give the record, a standard seven
inch single, a longer playing life than most pic-discs. The
hole in the center is the tailpipe of a vintage car; the flip
side lists credits. The release sets the stage for a mid
November Cars tour of the U.K., France, Belgium,
Holland and Germany.
On the home front, The Cars played six new songs in a
recent Worchester Mass. concert, with the Shirts
("Shoits") from Brooklyn opening for them. The Cars
have also been asked back to WAAF-FM to play DJs
(sorry, we mean "air personalities") again. Will Ric play
Suicide's Greatest Hits?
Dirk Hamilton opened the door of his house in the
shadow of "Mount Wolverton" (not "Wolverton Moun
tain" as we reported here) to find a Western Onion (not
of the William TeU Overture). Dispatched by loyal pub
licity persons from Dirk's label, the tap dancing mes
senger was male, which was a slight disappointment to
Dirk. (If they'd had time, they'd have sent a belly dancer).
Dirk, who's still writing songs for his next album, added
bass player Wayne Smith to his band recently. A Stock
ton, Calif, native, Smith clicked so well in one rehearsal
that he was hired on the spot.
Donald Byrd's album Thank you for F.U.M.L. (Funk
ing Up My Life) features lyrics by a pair of new writers,
Art Posey and Josef Powell, who were introduced to
Donald by guitarist Wah Wah Watson, who plays on the
LP. "They brought me a song called 'Have You Heard The
News' and it was so good, I just let them write the whole
album." The two also put lyrics to Duke Pearson's classic
"Cristo Rendentor which Donald has re-recorded after
sixteen years. "Everybody has been asking me to record it
again, which is difficult because I hear things differently
now. The first time I recorded it was the first time I got
into a vocal concept: Syllables were sung to it, but it
wasn't scat singing-they were written out beforehand.
This version, of course, has words."
Oregon has written music for the film Fast Break, Don
Zavin's portrait of the Portland Trailblazers' world
championship season. The film contains long interviews
with since-defected Bill Walton and includes sequences of
Walton and baseball playerwriter Larry Colton bicycling
for miles along the Oregon coast, all to the tune of
Oregon's "Water Wheel," (once called "Walton") which
the band also plays on its Out Of Tne Woods album.
John Prine will headline at the Grand Ole Opry in
Nashville for the first time on October 5, and Warner
Music is soon to publish a folio of John s songs from
Bniised Orange.
